China already copied the S-300 missile defense system and numerous obsolete jets that Russia sold to them. It's why Putin is reluctant to sell their highest end hardware to China.  What's the point of a customer that buys moderate amounts of stuff and then turns around and stops buying once they finish making copycats?

And why would Malaysia want the source codes? To install Russian weapons? Firstly, we do not have the money or experts to write and alter millions of aircraft coding. Secondly, there is a whole gamut of weapons and electronic support equipment which can be installed on such jets. When you buy a US/Euro jet you are buying into an entire ecosystem of military weapons and tech.

if you actually follow the RMAF as diligently you follow PLAAF then you should know that the Hornet only commissioned into RMAF service in 1996
and training and familiarization took about a year + before the squadron are fully operational and since then they have been heavily upgraded in order to keep up the current issue and geo political in the area.
