At least they should have informed investors prior to blockage. People can have their money stuck in there.

So far I tried, the SG website is working though, can be accessed from Malaysia without issues. Only the native US version is blocked.

A question for those who use TD Ameritrade, is there any advantage of TDA over IBKR/TSG? Or is it just a matter of preference?

Why did you guys choose to open a TDA account instead of IBKR/TSG?

I am thinking of venturing into US markets. Need to collect some info from the veterans here.

tda is like bmw... more expensive but enjoyable... ibkr is like myvi...

lol

So it is just the feel and the design of the user interface that differentiates the 2?

tda got more/better tools, e.g. for options trading, etc...not just pretty interfaces... but if you don't need them then is just fluff...

so depends what you want for... got other brokers maybe better suited for different needs

I only do stocks. No derivative for me. I guess I will just use IBKR/TSG that I am already using now, save the hassle of opening a new brokerage account.

Thanks for the info dwrk.

Interface
Interactive broker have one of the worst interface (TWS desktop). It's not user friendly and is for traders. But a bit of learning and you are good to go.

Cost
TD is commision free but that's where the cheapest stop.
They charge you USD25/withdrawal.
Higher margin rate Vs Interactive broker
Their foreign currency is not real time. I believed they mark up slightly.

If you are using pure interactive broker it cost only usd0.35/transaction.
One free withdrawal a month.
Real time, real rates without markup.
Cheapest margin rates on the market at 1.59%p.a

Market access
TD is only for US market
Interactive broker is truly global. US, Canada, South America, UK, Europe, HK, JP, SG, AU. You name it.

Application speed
TD takes like 6 months
Interactive broker 1-3 days to get your account up and running.

Fractional shares
TD does not have fractional shares.
Interactive broker have fractional shares if you are using pure interactive broker.

Thanks guys. I use TWS desktop often so I think they are quite ok for me lol. I have not fully explored all the functions, but I like the charts functions which allow me to do technical analysis on deciding when to buy (for long term). I have used it to buy Parkway LIFE when it was around 3.83 last year, now at 4.1x, that's a 7-8% return in some 2-3 months time, not bad for a decent REIT.

Somehow Malaysian authorities don't block TDA SG's website anymore. Now I can access it fine, no change to DNS settings.

The US website is still blocked though.

This one better consult other sifus. I am not familiar with fund transfers into TDA SG.

Some guides are available:

Maybank MY fees/charges: https://www.maybank2u.com.my/maybank2u/mala...nking_fees.page?

CIMB MY fees/charges: https://www.cimb.com.my/en/personal/help-su...remittance.html

For your case, since you don't have DBS/POSB bank, you only have 2 choices, either cheque deposit to TDA Singapore from a SG cheque account (Cheques will only be accepted from Singapore banks. Cheques received from a location outside of Singapore will not be accepted) or wire transfer to TDA US from a Malaysia/SG bank.

Use hotlink prepaid IDs calls. Only cost RM0.12/minute I think. Of course must dial IDD code or else you will be charged normal rates.

I have hotlink just for calling sg. biggrin.gif

You got suggestion for HK ah? My Hang Seng bank account got locked out 2 days ago just because wrong password for 3 times, need to dial directly from here, cost me like 8-10 ringgit within half an hour...
