Hi,
I wud like to get the ps3 and play FF XII, but was told will only be able to play the original japanese version since ps2 games will still be region lock. Locally, the ps3 are asian sets, so does that mean only japanese ffxiii on it? Does the jap version has eng sub? Thanks.

fxii international will have jpn text, but not that impossible to play. gamefaqs have translations for menus, items, license grids and whatnot. and playing ffxii in 16:9 upscaled to 720p is so fantastic.

if TS don't like to play FFXII with Jap texts, best to get the US version of the PS3 or wouldn't mind spending a lil bit more on a PS2

yes, if u like ps2 games alot, a good investment is to buy a USA PS3 and go ebay to shop for ps2 games. 1.90 really makes ps2 games look good in 480p/720p.

rx330, i dont have camera or good photo-taking skills. but playing NTSC/J ffxii the (2006 version not the zodiac job version), i can really appreciate the game visuals more in 480p/720p. the 2006 version is 4:3 only though so i'm getting basically 960*720 with black bars on left & right. currently using same benq monitor recommended by alexwlh smile.gif

Hi, thanks for all the replies. Went to a shop today and was told ntsc U/C will work on asian set ps3, is that true? I doubt it since NTSC U/C is for US/Canada if I am not mistaken...but the guy sounds very confident it will work and guaranteed it. thought?

Nope it doesn't work. I have the ntsc u/c ff xii original & it doesn't run on asian ps3 - "This disc cannot be started due to region restrictions". (kinda regret selling the old ps2 tongue.gif ) - Pre-ordered the FF XII International Zodiac Job System (Asia) , due out Aug 7th. Not sure if it has english menu support, though.

The one scheduled on the 9th is the JP version according to Play-Asia. I pre-ordered the Asian version which is on the 7th. Dunno if there's any difference but it's cheaper tongue.gif

the scary part is the playstation engineers are still working on and improving ps2 BC. imagine a future update that makes all ps2 games squeaky clean with FSAA! just buying or rebuying ps2 games alone will fill-up many great games playable on ps3 thumbup.gif

my ICO also PAL. i think yours are the special postcard collectors edition, eh?

ICO, odin sphere / grim grimoire / okami are all 4:3 IINM

shadow of collosus (chinese) looks good. (don't expect any miracles, the jaggies and shimmering still there)

can defeat the region lock on ps2 games. but must make super-duper risky swap switch mod. maybe wait till the mods more stable and tested.

dunno y, but i cannot backup any ps2 saves made on the ps3 to usb drive. weird, eh?

adliew, do let us know when you receive your zodiac job version ya. Anyway, how do you plan to play it if it's jap text?

btw, just curious, for asian (japs aside) countries such as s'pore, korea, etc, isnt there an english text version? U dont expect all asians to read jap do they?

Added on August 8, 2007, 12:26 amI couldnt resist, so placed my order thru playasia and it shipped in an hour after order. Will update once I get the copy (if selectable in eng).

dexth, video games generally sell very well in Japan, but not in other asian countries. so most of the game publishers do not bother to translate the asian version to english and they do not treat the non japan countries as a major market (sad sad). Situation is getting better though, with some PS2/PS3/XBOX360 games being translated to chinese/english for the Asia version. I guess its due to higher video games demand in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. If we look into the past, most games prior to PS2 do not even have Asian version.

By the way, for FF - FF12 (non zodiac) has never had a Asian-english version. FF10 also never had Asian-english version. Both have Asian-Japanese version though. How do the asians read the japanese? we guess lor...

yup, jpn developed videogames are often sold in asian countries in jpn only, kinda like j-pop cds, LoL. actually in south korea, ffxii was released in JPN only with a korean manual.

its pretty common to buy jrpg games in HK with the additional chinese gameguide/translation book. for customers in HK or TWN (the main Asian legal videogames market) a game fully in English is just as unappealing as a game fully in JPN.

but sony themselves are doing some work to translate games into traditional chinese for asian versions. games like ico, SotC, GT4, TT, siren, rule of rose, ape escape 3 have chinese versions.

Thanks for the replies. I wasnt aware since i didnt own ps2 before...i guess this is mainly due to our piracy situation. I couldnt even find any shop in pg selling original ps2 game. i guess sony can always choose to make ps2 games compatible with US region but again it's all about $$$.
btw, FF X international (asia/jpn version) is the only FF game to feature full english text, check it out.

i am also glad that Sony removed the region lock for PS3 games , and most of the PSP games. now the asian gamers can choose to buy the US version in english.

Received my copy of the zodiac job system today - sadly no english text support although game voice is in english. Gotta look for some translation help at Gamesfaq i guess tongue.gif Game manual is fully JP but there's an extra sheet w/ chinese & english explanation for the game basics.

Well for us FF fans that don't own both ps2 & ps3 consoles, we're pretty much screwed eh? biggrin.gif Either get a US PS3/ PS2 or modded ps2 then? Just looking for ways to play english version ff12 on asian ps3 that's all - tongue.gif Although fewer nice PS2 titles are being released these days, there are still a few great games that i'd like to experience e.g. God of War 2, Odin's Sphere & FF XII International Zodiac - I think some of us here share something in common: trying to play the last remaining must-have PS2 titles on their respective Asian PS3 set. I believe this thread wouldn't have even existed if TS happens to own both PS2 & PS3 consoles.
