Hi guys, my Kia forte 1.6 SX recently cannot be start.

The symptom goes like engine is cranking when the start button pushed but cannot start (different sound compare to a flat battery). I have tried to start several times and most of the time it is just cranking, but 1 out of 5 times the engine is able to start (rpm raise to 8xx) and stay running for 2~3 second before it stall again.

I run a OBDII code scan and it shows before fault code.

=======================================
P1690
(ECU: 7E8)

ODBII: Wastegate Solenoid Circuit malfunction
Hyndai_Kia: W/Heater Relay Fault

========================================

I did some study on the code and looks like the P1690 is related to SMARTRA no response.

Anyone have any idea I can by-pass or fix this SMARTRA (not sure about the relay and wastegate solenoid tho).

I am looking if anyway I can get the car start, at least for me to drive to the workshop.

Thanks,
Sim

P1690, exactly the issue on my family’s Kia Forte.

The car is able to start after you clear the error on the OBDII device but will come back later after some time.

The problem was due to the ECU. Either get it replaced or repaired

Hope this helps

Could be the immobilizer not communicating with the keyfob? Check the transponder battery.

My Kia Sportage used to have this issue previously. I opted to just change the keyfob battery and reset the ECU by unplugging the 12V battery for 15 mins.

Don't forget to put the key fob at the correct location. Usually inside the centre glove box. The car will sync with the key fob and it should be working again.

Thats why modern cars using so many Electronics are a hassle. No wonder my neighbour still uses Iswara and Wira ( Both Carb). All mechanical parts ... no ECU nonsense.

another headache car is BMW E46. Go to youtube and look. Thats why so many owners selling it.

Ok so after replacing the smart key battery this morning, the No Start problem still persist.
So I use a cheap ELM327 to clear the P1690 code, then disconnect the car 12V battery to perform "capacitor discharge" (refer https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vYtyDX9RTWs)

After 1 hour, connect the 12V baterry back, my car is now able to start normally. I have driven the car around, Stop the engine and Restarted the engine for 3 times now.

I will monitor and revert if the problem recurs. Thank you everyone for your input.
