Does this temperature consider hot for me that running Q6600 @ 2.4GHz stock with Xigmatek HDT-S1283 & Tuniq-TX2 with closed Thermaltake Tsunami Dream casing in a place without air-con and just under a ceiling fan? This temperature was taken when I'm doing normal work like surfing, downloading, messengering and DOTA-ing (DOTA doesn't take very high load I suppose unsure.gif).

u might need to re-check ur air ventilation system

its seems hot abit leh.. mine running on stock setup idle around 30c++ only

Well, I'm on Thermaltake Tsunami Dream casing and the setting:

I guess you can have an idea of how the air flow goes already, got it? unsure.gif

don't bull here, he can oc it to 3.6ghz at 1.5vcore.
my previous q6600 is 1.275 VID but max oc is 1.51vcore at 3.6ghz. idle 39C, load 70C, ambient 29C no aircon.

this casing ventilation is not bad, i have one before.
did you try reapply the TIM on the processor?
*
Haven't try so... re-apply the TIM would really need some effort to be done since my casing doesn't come with motherboard tray sweat.gif ... And I wonder how should be Tunix-TX2 TIM to be applied on Xigmatek HDT-S1283 to provide the best performance possible? unsure.gif

I tried something new on how I apply the TIM... I spread a thin layer on the IHS but not fully covering the whole IHS up and then I drop a small dollop in the middle before I hump the HSF on. Guess this isn't a good combo method? doh.gif

if you don't wanna oc, then i suggest you don't bother it.
my casing also doesn't have mobo tray, but i've reapplied at least 5 times TIM on the processor for the best performance. sweat.gif
*
I'm thinking of getting it running at 3.2GHz @ 24/7... but being with that temperature running only at stock, I really doubting if running at 3.2GHz would be a good idea sweat.gif. BTW, what HSF are you using and also how you apply your TIM on the processor? When you dismount the HSF from your processor, how do you clean the TIm before you reapply it? Artic Cleaner would be a better pick? unsure.gif

vearn27, you using push pin or the socket and skru to mount ur sigmatek ?? S&S kit usually gives u better results.
*
I'm using the S&S Kit. Anyway, what VCore did you guys set while running the Q6600 at stock? Mine currently at 1.200V unsure.gif

Actually I haven't really understand proper techniques and ways to start OCing... I only read most of the theories but not the steps and guides... anyone care to share? unsure.gif

OC guide? try read vrforum, there is a very details one there.

Honestly, I never try any OC before or know the proper ways and techniques. All I read just the sum of the theory by someone in Anandtech's forum. Doesn't really wish to screw things up for my first OC experience sweat.gif. Well, wouldn't ya mind showing me the direct link? unsure.gif

Hahaha... it seems like all recommending the "Overclocking Guide" from the same person but only different forum which the author posted and updated it laugh.gif.

VR Zone Forum - How To : Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals)
Anandtech Forum - How To : Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals)
Legit Reviews - How To : Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals)

I already fully read the guide and absorbed some of the basic in overclock theories. However, the part which I'm not quite sure is regarding the FSB:DRAM on how to get it to run at 1:1 ratio. What I understand from the guide is that if we wanted to get a ratio or 1:1 synchronous, we should set the DRAM which is 2x the speed of our FSB in order to get 1:1 as DRAM/2 for the reason of DDR2. I wonder how does this effect the RAM clocking which now I'm running at DDR800 4-4-4-15 @ 2.1V? unsure.gif

Besides, a successful overclock should be reaching the FSB that we targetted at the lowest VCore possible which could run the clock stable without error. For newbie like me, how actually I should start an overclocking process? By raising the VCore first or FSB? And when should or shouldn't I deal with the NB and SB power... anyone willing to help me perhaps? unsure.gif

Thanks in advance notworthy.gif.

As for the way to apply, see this PDF.

I added two more dots to it.

I've replace the Xigmatek S1283 fan with a Panaflo FBA12G12U. That's a 120x120x38mm 114.7cfm fan.
*
Oh... you used the conventional straight line method with additional two drops (I guess this additional two drops best fits with Xigmatek's HDT design). In the other way around, I used the thin layer (not fully covering the IHS) method with extra small dollop in the middle hmm.gif. Gonna wait till the next time I switch casing only reapply TIM ba, hard work if to remove the HSF now and reapply it while in the casing sweat.gif.

It's quite troublesome when board is assemble in the casing. If not for that I want to install HR-05, I won't bother reapply the TIM as well. tongue.gif

@kmarc
It's more noisier. My casing right now has 3 high performance fans including the Xigmatek's all pushing over 80cfm, another two CoolerMaster low noise fans. Haven't install the Xigmatek inside yet. sweat.gif
*
Haha... yeah. Kinda regret never buy a casing with slide-in motherboard tray last time sad.gif. Ah well... hunting for one now... any decent casing to recommend? Silverstone's TJ10 ESA? laugh.gif

Anyone here care to share your setting for the VID when you overclock your Q6600 to 356MHz x 9 = 3.2GHz? unsure.gif

for me .. 400x8 or 356x9 .. 3.2ghz vcore 1.38-1.40 .. depending on how hot it gets .. i dont have very good cpu cooler tongue.gif
*
If I'm not mistaken, that number quite high for Q6600 @ 3.2GHz, isn't? Or that's the normal VCore? hmm.gif

Anyway, can someone elaborate me on how to calculate the VID + amount to be the total VCore? unsure.gif

I'm newbie in OCing and only going to try it out today. How should I start? Raise the FSB first or the VID first?

Mine also needs 1.400v BIOS for 3.2Ghz.

Calculate VID + vcore? What do you mean?

You can try the FSB first to see how high you can OC at stock....  smile.gif
*
Oh icic. I had gone through your overclocking guide a few times already and I think I'll go through another time today when I really start OCing my rig tonight laugh.gif

Erm... calculate the VCore when added certain amount of "extra" VID (sorry, forgot what it called sweat.gif)

You mean I raise the FSB till at a level where I failed to POST or load Windows? unsure.gif

Nope. Raise your FSB until you get errors in prime95 (while stressing your rig)...... However, my method of overclocking is in windows and not in BIOS..... only the final settings will be set in BIOS....  smile.gif
*
Ohh... got any application which could let me change the FSB in Windows? unsure.gif

My specification is as on my siggie. So, in another way you mean raise the FSB till gets error in Prime95. Then raise my VID Special Add if I wanted to go higher and then continue push my FSB, error, increase VID Special ADD... till I get my desired speed and stability? unsure.gif

CPU
Q6600 3.2GHz @ 400 x 8
BIOS: +37.5mV (1.2375)? (I'm not sure if I calculate correctly for 1.2000V (stock) + 0.0375 (37.5mV) = 1.2375? unsure.gif)
CPU-Z Idle: 1.216V
CPU-Z Load: 1.184V

Maximum Temperature Reported
Processor core: 65C
Chipset: 55C
PWM: 51C

Consider a good OC? unsure.gif

Edited: CPU-Z Idle is 1.232V smile.gif

is ur Xigmatek install correctly, temp a bit too high.

well u can check ur stock voltage when u installed everything at default.

i believe u can push more once u get the cpu temp down abit
*
Yeah, I'm pretty sure my HSF and TIM working well, it's just that the ambient temperature here is really terrible sweat.gif. I did once run my rig in air-con room and it goes as low as 29C for the processor reading.

My stock voltage is 1.2000V. I already satisfied at 3.2GHz and doing 1:1 ratio with my DRAM smile.gif

Anyway, my temperature consider high at this stage? unsure.gif

rclxms.gif 3.2ghz is a good start, must seduce u to get more out of ur proc..........hehe

1.2v at stock is really good. mine give around 1.27.....
*
Haha... sometime I would even sweat even under the ceiling fan laugh.gif ... so you can roughly guess the temperature sweat.gif

I'm good at 3.2GHz with 1:1, doesn't wish to go any further already tongue.gif.

QUOTE(remysix @ Mar 5 2008, 04:27 PM)
in that case, then it might be the ambient temp...u really need to do something about it...mine last time also like that one...untill i drilled a hole at the sidepanel to fit the 120mm fan...then the temp droped to an acceptable value...sub-60c
*
I have a side blower as well, using Vantec 92mm UV-Led fan. I'm changing the front 120mm intake soon as it started to give me problem already with noisy sound sweat.gif. Any recommendation to replace the front 120mm intake? unsure.gif

Hmm... you are overclocking at stock VCore? It seems like your Q6600 has a high VID. BTW, if your processor core temperature (any) doesn't exceed 65C during maximum load (priming), that should be fine. However, get a decent 3rd party cpu cooler to squeeze extra performance from your processor smile.gif
