Mid or March Condition: Heavy Snow
Otaru - Sapporo are heavy usage road, so road will be always in removed snow by those snow boulder truck. Safe to drive but need extra caution.
Niseko & Hakodate road condition will be very bad. Train will be 50/50 chances closed due to heavy snow.
No snow driving experience are not recommended.

End of March / Early April Condition: Snow
Otaru - Sapporo road condition will good but still in slippery condition. Drive with extra caution.

Niseko & Hakodate road condition will be very slippery. Both side of Road can see very thick snow wall. Snow Boulder truck cleaning snow ration not as much as Sapporo - Otaru, so snow accumulated in road will be alot and very slippery. JR Hokkaido train will be operation.

Japan are not friendly to Malaysian wallet. Ringgit are too low. A 3 days Tokyo wide pass ( https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361_06.html ) will worth it if u plan to travel far to Mt. Fuji, sking at Gala Yuzawa and Samurai town "Nikko". The pass are Jpy10,180 with unlimited travel on shinkansen and JR trains for 3 consecutive days

There are plenty of nice food around Tokyo but famous food will not be cheap.

Wagyu are really worth it in Tokyo compared to Malaysia. (highly recommend Seiyuxan restaurant near Shimbashi Station)

Things must try when in Japan:
1) Tempura shop (quality a lot better than the best u had in Malaysia)
2) Grill Unagi
3) A5 Wagyu beef + beef tongue BBQ
4) Sashimi n grill fish roe (Tarako Yaki)
5) Ichiran Ramen
For budget meal:
Yoshinoya, Sukiya and Song wu. All 3 have good value set meal (they have english menu for ordering)

When the sun sets, temperature drops very fast. Be prepared and bring extra clothing if u plan to stay out until late
*
Can I also recommend tonkatsu and gyukatsu ?

Tonkatsu is fried pork cutlet
Gyukatsu is fried beef cutlet but the way you eat this is slightly different.. you put the meat on the stone grill so the doneness is to your liking ..

gyukatsu motomura used to be very good before they opened many branches across Tokyo.. i think the quality dropped slightly
my friend preferred Asakusa Gyukatsu.

Conveyor belt sushi is worth trying also. Please try their tuna (Akemi, Toro or Otoro) . Malaysians like to order Salmon when eating in japanese restaurant i think.

If you have extra money, try their omakase. Totally different level compare to the ones offered here and similar pricing. Try Kyubey in Ginza. Just go at opening 11 or 11:30am to put your name down and they will tell you when to go back. Try to get counter seats. There's like 3 different menu .. 6k , 8k, and 14k not including 10% tax

yep thats why opted Narita, HND one would arrive at 9.30, then need rush luggage collection then last train/bus at 11pm+

but man narita.. is far from tokyo
*
I think I arrived around the same time when i flew with Singapore Airlines. It wasn't that rush tbh. I was traveling alone and i walked quickly to try and bypass as many ppl as possible. When I reach the luggage collection place, the luggage was arranged nicely, in colour and size, ready for you to pick up already. From the moment I get out from my seat to the luggage place, probably around 30 - 40 minutes. They are quite efficient i think pre-Covid to handle high amount of inbound travellers. Now i'm not sure though.

Alright. Booked the following:

Travel Date: 30/11/22 (reach 2pm noon) > 11/12/22 (Flight at 12am, on 11th), all local times
Duration: 11 nights

PAL - 30NOV22 KUL>MNL>HND
MH - 11DEC22 HND>KUL

I'm thinking of dividing the days as per follows:

1 night in Tokyo
3 nights in Osaka
1/2 night in Kyoto
1/2 nights in Nagoya
1 nights in Fuji
3 nights in Tokyo

First timer to Japan, would like to seek for suggestions on the time allocated suitable for basics for the cities?

I'm looking for mainly sightseeing / food with perhaps consideration for visiting major attractions i.e. Theme parks / etc

Just started to plan my schedule

Travelling in pair.

Am considering the JRPass 1 week, then final few days maybe more localized passes.
*
too ambitious haha probably better you just stay in Tokyo and go Fuji ... Tokyo plenty of things / suburbs to fill up your 10 -11 days there

QUOTE(sadukarzz @ Oct 10 2022, 11:23 PM)
Yeah, I gave some thought about it and decided to forgo Nagoya / Osaka for now. I'll return again for these 2 especially after the expansion of the theme parks.

Kyoto though, I think I'd really want to spend some time there to just soak in the environment before the tourism returns.

Based on what I can find, Kyoto on pre-covid season, was a nightmare in terms of foot traffic.

So I have revised my plans as per below:

Considerations -
1. Pre-winter, so timing is not too cold yet (hopefully, climate change is a little more merciful).
2. I will be travelling mostly with train (I plan to take the 7 day JR Pass).
3. I will also be flying to/from Haneda.
4. I would like to go for hotsprings / theme parks (major ones, of course).
5. Food. I think I will be spending alot on those.
6. Shopping for clothes if applicable, I plan to travel with adequate clothing so I can buy some.

Cities/areas I plan to visit:
1. Tokyo (5 nights)
2. Mt.Fuji / Hakone region (2-3 nights)
3. Kyoto (2-3 nights)

I think this would be more reasonable compared to my previous plans which includes Osaka & Nagoya.

What do you guys think?

=================================================

Details:

Dates - 30Nov22 - 11Dec22
Flight - MH (HND>KUL) points; PAL (KUL>MNL>HND) RM1800, 2 pax
Hotels - Yet to be booked
Pass - JR Pass 7 days + Suica
*
2 nights in Mt Fuji should be enough. If you have enough budget, you can try search Kukuna or any hotels around Lake Kawaguchiko. Check if the rooms have a Mt Fuji view.

If your hotel doesn't have a Mt Fuji view or onsen. Can try these 2 places. They both have a Mt Fuji view are these 2. I forgot how much but should be around 1000 yen or cheaper.

Fuji Yurari Hot Spring (newer and larger with more pools outdoor, it's abit far, I rented a car and drove around so it was easy for me.)
Yamanakako Onsen Benifuji no Yu hot spring

Awesome! Thank you for the recommendation on the Fuji portion.

Quick question, we drive on the same side, and have driver seats at the same side as Japan correct?

So all that's needed is the international driving permit (Complete the form, surrender domestic license, pay RM150).

How's driving in Japan like? Similar to Mahresia?
*
Yes. Drive on the same side. If you uses signal to try and cut to the other lane, a lot of times they are polite enough to let you go first. I rented Alphard hybrid from Toyota. Their GPS abit hard to use unless you know the mapcode. Later which i found the website to get mapcode here. https://japanmapcode.com/en

I think Japanese are like the best users of highway. Each lane drive at the appropriate speed. No one cut left and right at all. So I just follow the same speed as the car in front of me. I was driving at 150km/h at some point. If there's a jam, car in front will use double signal to tell you to watch out and slow down. Toll and parking especially in cities is expensive though. But if you arrive Hakone area and rent a car to go around, should be better than public transport. I never tried the public transport around Fuji area. You can go Gotemba Premium Outlet if you want to do some shopping, if the weather is sunny and clear skies, you can see Mt Fuji. Winter + early morning should have better visibility. Afternoon normally can't see much. So wake up early to go around and take photos or just check the weather if it's sunny. It all depends on luck basically.

Tenku no torii

Chureito Pagoda

Oshino Hakkai

Oishi Park

https://thesmartlocal.com/japan/fujiyoshida-honcho-street/ *Edit: added this link*

these places should be quite iconic. If you do enough research, normally should see these few places to take touristy photos. haha

Redeemed my krisflyer points for myself and my wife as our "honeymoon" trip for SQ.
Flying to Narita on 16 November until 30 November 2022 (Haneda all fully redeemed, sigh...)
I'm arriving 730am JPT 17 November in Narita, I have 13 days to go around.

- Trying to formula a list what to do in Tokyo. She just gave a bunch of names like Shibuya, Ginza, Asakusa etc but unsure what to see there.

*
Shibuya i think a lot of new places open... you might want to watch a few youtube videos and see the new places. I recommend Shibuya Sky Scramble Square when the weather is nice. I think you might be in time for yellow gingko leaves. I went to Jingu Gaien Ginkgo Avenue. The prediction should be around the last week of November.

Ginza is for shopping premium brands. I do recommend Bills Ginza for their ricotta pancakes though or if you want to try Omakase, i recommend go Kyubey when they open to put down your name. Then go shopping and come back at whatever time they tell you.

Asakusa ... not sure if I did anything there other than the Sensoji and the shoplots leading to Sensoji. A lot of tourists including Japanese.

haha ... When in Rome, do as the Romans do

I went to the one in Odaiba for my first time though. There were more foreigners. Too many people to actually relax. A lot of times you will see the local milk sold in glass bottle in a vending machine when you come out of the onsen in public area. That one is a must after onsen. thumbup.gif

Naeba

https://www.princehotels.com/naeba/map-direction/

There's a bus schedule here but it's still for the 2021/22 season. You probably have to check again after it's updated. You need to travel to Echigo Yuzawa station to take the bus to Naeba. I assume you will stay at the Prince Hotel?

Is it your first time skiing or snowboarding?

Been to niseko .. but this season the flight to sapporo really limited

How about accommodation.. those villa type like niseko ?
*
I have never been there but on google maps it seems limited and other hotels seems like abit far for walking distance. There's not much difference in price also i think. I would save the trouble and just book with Prince Hotel if you planning to go Naeba.

I have only been to Karuizawa for snowboarding. So can't give you much information as well for other ski resort like Hakuba / Gala Yuzawa / Naeba. But I think I would allocate 2 days to travel in and out of the ski resort. Otherwise might felt too rush or tiring.

Have you looked at EVA air to Hokkaido? I bought EVA to Hokkaido in February for around 3.3k but the accommodation are very limited after Japan gov announced that they are reopening the border.

Hi guys, for a family trip (9 people), is it recommended to take the Airbnb whole apartment  or just stay hotel with separate rooms?  Airbnb is cheaper but I just researched that it's high likely a commit suicide unit?  It seems abit creepy but can anyone can share their experiences renting Airbnb? Prefer to have everyone in a unit together...  Btw..location is Osaka and Kyoto.
*
Another thing you might want to consider is how many bathroom / toilet in the airbnb ? Cause separate rooms in hotel means you will spend less time in the morning waiting for everyone to get ready... I traveled in a group of 7. We stayed in separate hotel rooms so everyone get to sleep more vs someone have to wake up early and wait for everyone else to get ready...

I plan to go to Osaka next autumn. Non budget airlines like MAS, ANA and JAL is too expensive for a family trip  sweat.gif

next year still long time to go .. just wait for the price to go back to pre-covid ... AA not much difference after you add on luggage

Hi all,

I am travelling to Japan for leisure for 18days. Its quite scary to carry a stack of cash around.

I heard about the Revolut but sadly its not available in Malaysia.

Is there any other option? Are there any e wallet option available for tourists?

Thanks!
*
Withdraw from atm? at a small charge.. i think most 7E will have atm machine. You have to contact your bank to ask about this function also. Some people use the BigPay card i guess. I always carry cash though ariybd 200k to 300k for 10+ days.

since I'm travelling solo, I also need to look for solo friendly eateries ...

most that I found, it starts with 2 pax minimum and hard to get reservation (needs JP phone number)

i made reservation on the website and went to this restaurant alone.. i was also travelling solo with no JP phone number.. it was ok but for the price i think you can get something better.. cause the cut of meat is not really the best

QUOTE(kenloh7 @ Mar 4 2024, 02:57 PM)
My trip is coming soon in early Apr. have a few queries below.
1. JR train from Nagoya to Osaka, Kyoto to Nagoya better to buy earlier, buy direct at the station or get at discounted ticket store near the station (<--seems like need to waste time to exchange to an actual ticket also)?
2. Will be having 2x 24in sized luggage, can just put at the bag storage area in the shinkansen for free? First come first serve basis?
3. Register the visit japan QR first, or just fill in physically at customs? (so can assess the condition of queue to know which line is shorter, i am reaching Nagoya airport at 9am).
4. MITSUI OUTLET PARK JAZZ DREAM NAGASHIMA or Rinku Premium Outlets Osaka if were to choose 1 to shop?
5. USJ Mario tickets if without paying, only can grab it early around 7am on the app, or based on lottery?
6. Kyoto Bamboo forest in order to avoid the crowd, OK to go with local transport or taxi at 6am, from Kyoto Station?
7. Sagano Romantic Train need to prepurchase early?
8. Branded things like LV, Gucci cheaper compared to other places in the world?
9. Navitime or google maps for navigation?
10. Uniqlo things cheaper than in Malaysia? Talking about the Value buy items, not the RRP.

Sorry for the long questions, if anyone interested to reply on just 1 of them will still do.
*
1. Just buy on the spot.

2. When you buy your shinkansen ticket, just tell them you have the 2 24 inch luggage, they will recommend you on what to do.

5. Once you are inside, use the app to get earliest timeslot available. I queued at 7:30 went in around 8:20. Manage to get entry ticket for 10am. if you manage to reach the mario entrance before 8:30, i'm sure you don't need entrance ticket for the mario world. they only limit entry after 8:30.

6. It's quite big so if you wait a while and combine with photography skill can capture photo without crowd. If you just want to avoid crowd, just go early.

7. Book early. You can buy ticket up to 30 days before the actual date. https://www.sagano-kanko.co.jp/en/josyaken.php . Exchange ticket at Kyoto Station. There's a few method to claim using the machine. Read on the website

9. Google map good enough.

10. Uniqlo heattech cheaper after discount. Other items unsure.

Hi guys especially those who have went to the ski resort.

I am now at Sapporo, and wish to ask about Kokusai Ski Resort.as the hotel concierge was not so knowledgeable.

It is still open to public, and we would like to get the feel of the snow, and walkabout.

Is it allow by the ski resort management?

Thanks so much
*
i don't think they can stop you? you only need to buy ticket for the ski lift.. the mountain is public property from what i know
