There are rumours about a new hardware revision for wii next year supposedly with dvd video playback capabilities and HDDVD drive??? Can wii handle HD video playback? even my 1.5ghz pc stutter with 720p media not to mention wii's 729mhz processor and 1080p media. I might hold off purchasing a Wii this year if the rumour is true. Does anyone have any information? If it is like with psp v2000 and xbox 360 elite, many early adopters and current buyers will get pissed.

Wha? If there really is a Wii v2, I'd be pissed like mad.

But I doubt it there's a Wii v2. Not with the recent release of Wii. I'm guessing a version 2 will come out in 2 years time?

don't believe me? check this website http://www.gameboy-advance.net/wii/dvd-divx-player.htm

Initially Nintendo announced that Wi will play DVD movies with progressive scan just like any modern DVD player does nowadays, but as we found out just before the release they intentionally didn't include DVD playback in the Wii to save a couple of dollars on codec licensing fees! We find this ridiculous as now we have a computer that has 729MHz CPU (Central Processing Unit), 256MB main memory, 2 SD Memory Expansion slots, ATI Graphics Processing Unit DVD Optical Disc Drive + Support for resolution up to 480p and possibly unpgradable to 1080p and even support for 8.5GB dual layer DVD disc reading but NO DVD movie playback capability! For a device that has a REMOTE for a controller that is just plain out crazy not to include DVD playback so we will devote this page to FREE programs for playing DVD's and DIVX, XVID and other format video files on Wii console.

NINTENDO does have plans to release a new version of the Wii next year that will ship with a DVD player and possible even HD DVD capabilities. Gameinformer quotes Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime as saying that Nintendo decided not to ship with high-definition capability when it launched because it wanted to keep the cost down.

Microsoft was able to patch the Xbox 360 to support 1080p and Nintendo has already released a firmware patch for Wii that alows gamers to transfer game saves to SD cards that was previously impossble.

DVD still possible. But I think it is a bit impossible for a Wii to HD-DVD since it require more powerful processor (to play the video)

This day ppl dun really need to have a Wii as a DVD player since most of them already have a DVD player at home!
And if we use wii as DVD player it may also shorten the lens lifespan for gaming!

Well, you can play videos on the Wii. If you have a router though.
Using the Internet Channel, you can access your computer and play the videos that you want to watch on the Wii.

What was that program name. Wii Media Center?

Ah yes, Wii Media Center X.

American nintendo pres ident reggie has said that the DVd capable version comming late 07 might even have a HD player and support 1080? resolution he said that its not impossible but will be through Wiiconnect 24 as it needs a new drive it will come at an extra cost he also saidf that HD was on the table when Wii was being produced but owuld have added another 100us or more onto the final price thus being the reason it lacks it

For myself I would usually separate gaming and movies

I never once use my PS2 to play DVD, especially since DVD players are cheap nowadays.

HD and Bluray are still pretty "fresh" but give it a few years time it would be as affordable as DVD nowadays.
