here's the BIOS menu...

CPU Feature >

Thermal Control - Enabled

Limid CPUID MaxVal - Disabled

C1E Function - Disabled

Execute Disable Bit - Disabled

Virtualization Tech - Enabled

EIST Function - Disabled

in the BIOS, i actually did set to 400MHz FSB x 8 = 3.20GHz, RAM @DDR800 @5-5-5-15 CR2... but after loading to windows... i got 2.1GHz CPU doh.gif shakehead.gif

one more thing... i don't know what's the problem, everytime i save changes in the BIOS, the system will just shut down, after about 3-4 seconds, then it'll auto reboot (depends too... sometimes took me 2-3 times to power up...), is this because of the PSU? or the mobo itself?
*
Hmmm.... some forumers were having that problem too. Turning off EIST and C1E in bios but still get the power saving mode in windows. I'm sure your multiplier will return back to 8x when you stress your rig right? e.g. orthos, prime....

Anyway, try another thing - set the windows power scheme to "Always on".... see whether that will fix the problem...

My P35-DS3 will shut down too if I change the BIOS. Not always though. That is normal. However, it shouldn't reboot 2-3 times. That probably means your overclock is not stable......

hmm.gif, same thing... guess this mobo is crap doh.gif shakehead.gif, or is it the BIOS?
about the overclock unstable... i hit 3.2GHz on the 1st day, but i don't know what happened, it showed 2.13GHz this morning... doh.gif shakehead.gif
*
Could be something else. This is what happened to my rig.

Initially my rig no problems. Then I bought crucial 10th anni to try out (replacing my ballistix). Since then, my rig has to boot twice.... meaning on startup, it will shut down once, then boot up and load into windows.... doh.gif

My rig is stable though...... although I never tried to downclock to stock to see whether the reboot persist or not.... lazy... smile.gif So, it could be some incompatibility of my mobo to my new rams....... I guess have to downclock to see whether it is true or not..... hmm.gif

I don't think it is a good idea to gauge your CPU temp just by touching the heatsink/fins/heatpipes....... 3rd party coolers are so good in dissipating the heat.....

Even my CPU at 60'c, the HSF only feels slightly warm.....

doing some oc for my retired rig by retire little girl.

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0GHz  windows 1.18vcore bios 1.20vcore
Asus P5K-Premium BIOS 0404 Revision A2

Enermax Infiniti 650W Modular

When OCCT load,PSU delivered very stable voltage for all the rails,no voltage drop at all compared to idle when load,Asus voltage dampers enable.
Everything tested and run perfectly stable, rclxms.gif

tomolo will try to lower down the vcore again.

Wow! That's a good proc. Running at 500mhz!!!

However, you have to make sure that it is stable. And I doubt that it is running at stock vcore...... hmm.gif Maybe your motherboard is auto-overvolting?

Bro Kmarc..

Yes bro.,i set the voltage to auto..is that ok..?
*
If auto, that means that the mobo might increase the vcore when you overclock the CPU.

You have to be careful with that, as the overvolting might be too much.

It is better for you to put your own vcore manually. smile.gif

also dun know a lot bout timing ram in c2d...

Yeah, like gengstapo said, you need to disable a few things, specifically the C1E and EIST option in BIOS.

However, they are power saving modes and running it would not be a problem unless you are an extreme overclocker and wants every bit of stability for your rig.....

See my sig on my OC, still running EIST and C1E... smile.gif

Cool! So the penryn has no problems running on the P35?

What's the stock vcore for the 8400?

According to some of our forumers who had bought the proc, it is stated as 1.225v on the box.... not too sure about actual vcore when running....

Here's some more info:Attached Image

Did you guys read this review? http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/displ...olfdale_12.html

Can the following statements be trusted, considering that the wolfdale's max vcore is supposed to be 1.225v. Important facts are bolded.... hmm.gif

QUOTE
Actually, our tests showed that Wolfdale responds very good to Vcore increase. But we didn't aim for record-breaking speeds, so we only increased the processor Vcore in the BIOS Setup to 1.5V that resulted into the actual 1.42-1.46V taking into account Vdroop. This voltage increase is relatively harmless for a processor using an efficient air cooler and is acceptable for systems running 24/7. However, even in this case our Core 2 Duo E8500 didn't disappoint us at all.

We managed to get this processor to run stably at 4.37GHz. No doubt: Wolfdale CPUs will become another overclockers' favorite, because Conroe processors could hardly hit these speeds at extremely high voltages and with special cooing systems involved. By the way, our processor running at 4.37GHz retained quite acceptable thermal mode of only 70°C under workload.

What's your core temperature at that settings? You're using stock cooler right?
