Actually DPI is only important when it comes to printing using inkjet printers. Different printers has diff dpi ratings.Nikon got 300dpi horizontal & vertical resolution but canon with only 72dpi...

It is different from Pixels Per Inch (PPI) which is used to measure resolution when viewed on a monitor.
