The SFF is indoors. The temps don't vary as much as outside, one would hope.

maxtor 39C
WD 36C
nothing strange for the difference as i place the WD right under the Maxtor, so WD have more space beneath it, so better airflow for the WD

proud to say that my WD hard disks run pretty smoothly at the mid 40s celcius...

desktop-46 degrees
lappy-42 degrees.

By the way, a hard disk always has an optimum tempature to run smoothly, making it too low or absurdly high can be a problem for the functionality of the hard disk...

TS has to define why high temps.. i assume at 40 degrees to 50 degrees will destroy/kong the hard disk faster?

And i believe that as long u run the hard disk at operational temperatures given by the company, you wont have problems with your hard disk rolleyes.gif

Just google for the HDD datasheet. It should have the operating temperatures in there.
For ST3320620AS @ Seagate 320GB, it's 0 - 60c.

nod.gif, agreed... but i do suggesting that, ideal temp for HDD 40°C and below, above than that, improving airflow/case fan cooling down the HDD should be all right... icon_idea.gif

I tried once getting my HDD temperature up to 55-60c so i shut it down and restart the computer. Later on S.M.A.R.T report that one of the attribute is not OK. After that the temperature run back the usual 28-33c for some times, the attribute from S.M.A.R.T once again shows OK so i guess temperature too high isn't really good for HDD.

my hdd temp juz oni 40C,
last time my wd2500js is running damn hot,
the temp is abt 60C idle and 70C load,
i think is the sensor faulty or smart error,
even so high temp when i touched it i juz feel like 40C++ oni,
and my comp nvr hang or lag.

2 X 80GB WD HDD unknown temp because run in RAID 0 Configuration, but touch by hand is around 45*C

No Front and rear casing fan at all, no HDD fan, because its only capable to low down 5*C only, useless for me...so u wun find dust on top of HDD....only one 12cm exhaust fan from my Acbel i-power gold 500W PSU....using water cooling currently...because i want extremely silent PC, can't stay with the annoying buzzing sound of the fan...

Two of my Western Digital Caviar SE hover around 38'C to 40'C biggrin.gif

I read an article once regarding the effects of temperature on a HDD, surprisingly... The lifespan of a HDD greatly decreases below 25'C and above 60'C, or was it 50'C? rclxub.gif

my another WD 160 GB is just 37-38C

why Seagate is hotter? Is it because it is slimmer?

Temp 1 is mostly likely your CPU, Temp 2 and 3 could either be the Northbridge or PWM IC.

Temps for my 6 HDs in my case (Aerocool Baydream):

2x 160GB Seagate (one of them is the boot drive with OS, apps and games - heavy usage on that drive).
1x 320GB WD
- all 3 in a stack in 3x 5.25" drive bay with a 120mm LED fan blowing air into case through the HDs
- around 33-36C

1x 500GB Seagate
- in a 5.25" drive bay with cheap 2x fan HDD cooler mounted underneath the HD
- around 33-36C

1x 250GB WD
- in 3.25" internal drive bay mounted over PSU area (not directly over PSU)
- around 34-37C
- there are 3x 80mm LED fans blowing air over these internal drive bays

1x 250GB WD
- in a similar location as the 250GB WD above, but directly over PSU (there is a metal casing separation between the PSU and drive bays)
- around 43-45C
- there are 3x 80mm LED fans blowing air over these internal drive bays
- since the two 250GB drives are identical, and both have the same 3x 80mm fans blowing air over them, I believe the higher temps are from the one drive's mounting directly over the PSU.

IMO, anything below 50°C is ok already, 45°C you need to worry while above than 55°C, you better start doing something to cool it down icon_idea.gif

Never mind la. Hard disk have no problem run a little hotter. This is what I found out when googling about hdd temperatures.

According to Google engineers " Lower temperatures are associated with higher hard disk failure rates. "

Normally, my pc's temperatures should be around 42 and 40-41 if I using a big fan and face it to the side of my CPU.
What is the max temperature for a HDD in the safe zone?
When my HDD's temperatures getting higher, the application and games that I run will become slower and lagging and making some noise from my CPU. Why this happened?

always about 30-31 degree C.
wanna ask how hot is WD Raptor 10k??
*
Raptor 8MB cache run cooler normally below 40C but 16MB version run hot about 45C.

New Seagate 320GB 16MB and Maxtor 250GB 8MB (both SATA) about 45C -49C.

My old SATA1 120GB 8MB Seagate is the best, normally around 30C to 34C thumbup.gif

hard disks are designed to run even at 60C
i dun think there will be any problem even if it's 30C, 40C or 50C
