The EU is looking to make smartphone batteries easier to replace
Some Android users are still remembering the times when most of the Android phones had user-replaceable batteries, which is now an extremely rare commodity. Well, according to a leaked document, EU is planning to fix that in the near future by forcing manufacturers to make their phones' batteries more easily accessible and replaceable.

A Dutch financial website was able to obtain the information and the aim of the proposal is to reduce the electronic waste. It reads that if the user is able to change the battery hassle-free, he would do so and keep the device for longer instead of discarding it after two years of use. The proposal also suggests that manufacturers need to make the parts easily accessible to help third-party service centers.

Additionally, the plan includes recycling and re-use of raw materials after an electronic device is discarded. The EU will eventually work on a European collection system to gather old smartphones, tablets and chargers so recycling is made easy. More eco friendly and recyclable packages are also part of the proposal, which is said to be presented sometime next month.

not only devices now have different sizes for each model, now they need to include easy access battery style like 90s phone for eu countries? or different configurations internal/screw for user easy access?? or maybe even different types of batteries? too much variability..dream on

if usa no right to repair, they would just delay this conversation w any other country. go support right to repair then we’ll see progress back to consumer side worldwide

Actually we all should be thankful to EU for imposing the microUSB (eventually succeeded by TypeC) charging standards on all smartphones. That policy is a small revolution by itself.

You certainly won’t like the old days where every brands have their own proprietary charging ports or accessories.

Yeah, it is a good policy for environment. The smartphone manufacturer will be forced to follow if they want to sell in EU and the EU market is too big for them to ignore.

I support this move too. nod.gif
But one concern is, if the battery replacement was not done properly (phone not re-assembled to correct tolerance), then it would also affect the IP ratings of the said phone. sweat.gif
