Ok for me personally i think both handhelds are good in their own kinda way:
1) PSP : if you want a good all rounder in terms of video player, games, music player, wifi surfer, picture viewer, love homebrew and 3rd party software, the psp has many features to be explore and unlocked. The potential is endless if you have time to survey and research.
I've been using my PSP for like about 5 years now, still strong and running. Its like i said it meets all my demand for a good all rounder gadget, portable gamer, mp3 player, mp4 player, wifi, JPEG viewer, and the screen is among the best and sharpest in the market for a gadget this size.
2) NDSL : if you enjoyed nintendo games like super mario (who doesn't right?), surf internet, like touch screen interface (pen stylus). There is a vast library of fun games that can be enjoyed by all ages.
Been testing my friends NDSL for quite some time now about a year, i really like the fun games and the interface some games are played, a good game to get you and your girl in the mood for games are games like nintendogs, quite cute and cuddly those puppies. Super Mario Bros is still damn good fun for hours and replay value.
Ok let see, say if you are on a subway going someplace or work. I pick the NDSL anytime, why? Because you can enjoy the games instantly and load times are minimal for the games.
For psp games you need to wait for the load times and the game settings you wanna choose and stuff, btw when everything is done most likely you already reach your destination.
If budget allows you new buyers out there, i suggest you get both the NDSL and PSP, as both newer models are going to be launched soon, these 2 handhelds will turn out to be a great all time classic for years to come.
