The PS3 doesn't suffer from nasty overheating problems like the XBOX 360 so shrinking the CELL processor is not a must and secondly, it's best to buy the PS3 asap as future models won't come with Emotion Engine hardware so that means all PS1 and PS2 games will run in emulation mode so that means more compatibility issues like the owners in the UK are facing now.
