QUOTE(Genosyde @ Jul 18 2007, 06:12 PM)
I had two xbox 360s die on me. Both are Japanese units running off a step down transformer.

Xbox #1
From day one, I had some problem with this one. Occasionally, I get a message on screen that I should place the game DVD in an xbox 360. Sometimes, it takes quite a few tries of ejecting and restarting the xbox before the game starts properly. A check online reveals that this is a sign of possible hardware problem. I prayed hard that this is not the case and for almost 6 months, the unit worked fine except for the problem above.

Then one fine day while I was in a game, the screen froze. After a reboot, it was fine again but it started to happen more frequently over the next couple of days. Then it started to freeze after a couple of minutes in any game but will work indefinitely while in dashboard or viewing a movie.

Then it started to freeze while in dashboard and just a short while later, I got the 3ROD. Unplugging everything and reattaching managed to revive the unit one last time for a few seconds but after that it died permanently.

Xbox #2
Worried that the transformer might have been the cause of death, I got a much bigger (and more expensive) transformer for the 2nd unit. It too had a minor problem from day one. Once a while (every week or so) I will get a disc cannot be read error. A check that this problem is common as well but no one has linked this problem to a possible hardware error.

This second unit lasted about almost 6 months as well. The symptoms were very similar to the first unit. First it started freezing occasionally. Then more frequent. Then it freezes almost immediately in a game and finally 3ROD.

This time, I sent the unit to Djinn for the xclamp replacement. Got worried for a while though as it took almost 2 weeks for it to get fixed as it still wasn't stable after the replacement. I just got it back a few days ago and so far I have run it for about 3-4 hours each day and noticeable problems.

Conclusion:
If you are really worried about 3ROD I think it is wise to hold off until MS solves the problem or the new 65nm units are out. Despite all that you read here I don't think that there is anything that you can do avoid getting the 3ROD and the chances of getting a dud unit is pretty high at over 30%.
