I just want to know if the price I got quoted is fair. The guy said it's RM500 all in to change the timing belt and water pump for the perodua viva, I can probably save costs by buying the parts myself but then he quoted me RM300 for water pump + timing belt labor or RM200 for just the timing belt labor. I asked how long it'd take for just the timing belt and he said 3-4 hours. So essentially he's charging roughly RM50/hour. From looking up a diagram it looks like the water pump is in the same area as the timing belt, meaning you need to take both off anyway. I watched Scotty Kilmer do it for another car where they're both also integrated so I'm not sure why he's charging the extra hundred for something he needs to remove anyway. It sounds quite pricey to me but I haven't had a chance to survey around the other mechanics nearby since it's pretty late. I can probably delay it until next week but I'm hoping to get the repairs done by tomorrow so I can balik CNY in relative safety since it's been making thumping noises (thought it was a flat tire, sounds like rubber slapping) for months now only when I'm driving home from work at night and screeching noises recently. Only managed to pinpoint the issue to the timing belt in the past week. I don't want to state the race (same as my own) but let me just say I have pretty negative experiences so far with them in multiple incidents so I tend to be cautious when it comes to them. Only mechanic I actually trust to not tab on extra costs on unnecessary parts and repairs is in Melaka and I'm not sure the car would survive the trip there. He's a bit pricey but I trust that Indian mechanic to get the diagnosis correct (100% so far, even on shit I didn't realize were causing the issues I was facing) so I don't have a problem with going to him but alas he's pretty far from where I live now cry.gif

RM500 all in with water pump/timing belt and labor costs. Good point. I know you need to seal the water pump properly so it doesn't leak. The parts price seem alright, comparable to what the parts shop is charging but a bit more expensive than buying online. I'm just not so sure about the labor costs. This will wipe out most of my repair budget though so I'm looking for a second opinion. Their shop is pretty full of cars so it seems to have a decent reputation (either that or they're slow af).

Lazada there selling this set for 215

https://www.lazada.com.my/products/kelisake...gGm4Jb&search=1

if he indeed changes so many thing (include other belts, then i think it's alright)
generally those items that ppl hardly change in couple of years (like this water pump / timing belt / engine mounting ) is the time where they parang you. because you'll only change in 6-7years time or 150,000km of usage.

my advise is that bring own spare part and change them before they fail. by doing so you save money and have more reliability.

500 for parts and labour seems legit.
btw ask around 2 3 shops for quote then decide.
but the most important thing is quality of workmanship and honest .
even pay a bit more its okay.

Thanks for the input guys. Actually I might just grab the parts from him if the other shops charge the same labor costs. That lazada listing is about as much as he's supposedly charging me if I get the full set. Though if I can find a cheaper shop for labor that'd be better. hmm.gif The engine mounting is something I need to change too, the vibration is kinda strong when I'm stopped at a red light but it's not really important since it's just a quality of life/driving issue. I was just fishing around for quotations and thought he was trying to pull a fast one over me when he said I needed to change the water pump too but a bit of googling proved him right hmm.gif I need to get them both changed at the same time since they remove the same parts. Got some car maintenance stuff coming up later this year so I don't want to spend too much on unessential repairs.

jakal sombong Yeah that's the issue. Kena parang is one thing but workmanship is another. If they parang me but do good work then it's ok lah. But if suddenly got another issue because of their shoddy workmanship (like this one shop I went to before) then I'd be seriously pissed off. Another thing is they're not on google maps for whatever reason so I can't see reviews on whether they're any good. I might add them to Gmaps myself and post a review if I get work done there whistling.gif
