Mind you there's hundreds varieties of ferns in the world, and who is to say the one malaysian normally consume may be a different spesies.
Plus, based from what I read the amount of the carcinogenic compound is really dismissable. If you clean your veges thoroughly and prepare them properly, it should be safe to consume.
My advice is, don't look at everything too seriously. Otherwise, you'll be bound to not eat anything since everything may contain traces of chemicals, poisons, etc.
