GEORGE TOWN: Art and craft teacher Yeap Poh Looi has been baking rat-shaped pineapple tarts for her family and friends for the festive celebration of Chinese New Year.

The 42-year-old decided to give the recipe a try after browsing through social media.

“It’s the Year of the Rat, and what better way to add to the festive feel during this period than to present my family members and friends with rat-themed tarts.

“They are cute and meaningful to be given as gifts during Chinese New Year.

“I saw people sharing the recipe on Facebook and I could not resist baking them at home. I changed the recipe a bit to suit my taste buds.

“Instead of drawing the rat’s eyes and nose, I decided to use chocolate chips for the features, ” she said when met at her house in Perak Road recently.

Yeap said it took more time to bake the rat-shaped tarts compared with the usual pineapple tarts.

“For the normal ones, I can bake five bottles in an hour.

“But I could only bake one-and-a-half bottles for the rat-shaped tarts within the same time as I need to be very meticulous in shaping them.

“It takes me around five minutes to make a rat-shaped pineapple tart, ” she said.
