Current Influenza A Cases in Malaysia as of 20 January 2020 are as follows. Parents can take up vaccinations shots in Clinics for kids who are more exposed to the dangers of the spreading virus.

Do note that vaccinations should be taken while the child is healthy, NOT after contracting the virus.

Northern Malaysia

Influenza cases in Penang increased to 198 students from 96 secondary and primary schools compared to 178 cases from 87 schools.

Perlis has no recorded cases of the outbreak while Kedah has 20 cases since early January.

In Perak, the number of students infected by influenza A increased to 94 cases involving 55 schools in nine districts.

East Coast

The Terengganu Health Department recorded two clusters of ILI involving 9 individuals in the Setiu district.

Out of the 9 people, 5 are positive for influenza A, 3 are positive for influenza B and one has yet to be identified.

In Pahang, 53 students and 3 teachers in 9 districts have been infected by the disease while Kelantan is free from the contagion.

Central Malaysia

Selangor recorded the highest number of infections with 717 cases in 248 schools but currently, there are no deaths reported in Selangor due to the epidemic despite initial rumours.

South Malaysia

138 students in Johor have been infected with influenza A and authorities confirmed the death of seven-year-old Nur Dinie Damia Muhammad Noor Ain was not caused by the influenza based on clinical reports.

It was reported that 31 cases of influenza A involving 29 schoolchildren, a preschool pupil, and a female teacher were detected in Melaka in early January.

What can we do as parents/responsible adults?

Children will definitely forget to wash their hands and don’t touch their face after playing with their toys. So, as responsible adults, you would need to be there for them. Have wet wipes ready, hand sanitisers, and reminding them (yes even for the 1000th time) to wash their hands. Most importantly, if your child is unwell, let them rest at home rather than sending them to kindergarten, this would be the best way to allow your child to recover and not getting others sick in the process.

Besides that, keeping your household surfaces clean can also be of help to preventing the spread of Influenza or even Coronovirus. Areas to look our for are; the kitchen, bathrooms and door handles. Keeping a good circulation for your home is also good to preventing the spread of such viruses.

If you are worried about CoronaVirus/Wuhan Virus

As the Novel Coronavirus has flu like symptoms, it is then best to look out for these other factors if you are showing some symptoms;

1) Have you travelled to a high risk area in the last two weeks, Wuhan City or Hubei Province
2) Have you been in contact with someone suspected of catching the coronavirus? (Means if you have visited someone in the hospital or at their residence who have recently been to those places or is being tested.)
