PETALING JAYA: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong (pic) has criticised the Pakatan Harapan government over its decision to extend the PLUS toll concession period till 2058 instead of abolishing it as promised under its manifesto.

"For the record, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad gave the initial concession to PLUS for 30 years from 1998 to 2018.

"Then in 1998, Tun extended the concession for 12 years until 2030. The latest is the Pakatan government led by Tun extending it for 20 years to 2058," Dr Wee said in a Facebook post Thursday (Jan 16).

He noted that former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was forced to extend the concession period for eight years in 2005 to settle outstanding compensation left behind under Dr Mahathir's legacy.

"It is simple mathematics, under Tun Dr Mahathir's leadership, the total concession approved in stages is 30 + 12 + 8 + 20 = 70 (years).

"This is a record which can be entered into the 'Malaysia Book of Records'," he said.

Dr Wee also questioned what happened to Pakatan's promise of abolishing tolls.

"If unable to do it, don't promise," he said.

He said that Pakatan had hoodwinked the people by initially promising to abolish tolls but instead proposed a "traffic congestion charge" after taking over the government.

"Now, the toll concession has been extended until 2058," he said.

Earlier on Thursday, the Prime Minister announced that Cabinet had decided not to sell PLUS as the offers were not attractive enough.

Instead, PLUS' ownership would remain under Khazanah Nasional and the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), and the toll concession period would be extended by 20 years.

PLUS is the largest highway concessionaire in Malaysia.

Currently, PLUS is controlled by the UEM Group (a subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional), which holds a 51% stake and the remaining 49% by the EPF.

Khazanah had proposed that the best entity to take over PLUS was, in fact, the government.

It's really fucked up. Highways are supposed to be maintained by the government. Instead they privatise it. Let cronies collect the money for an indefinate time.

Fuck up malaysia.

Lebuhraya PLUS dirancang oleh Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) pada tahun 1977 dan pembinaan bermula pada tahun 1980 sebelum PM ke-4 menjadi PM pada Julai 1981.

Setelah kerajaan berjaya membina 366km dari jumlah kepanjangan 823km dengan menggunakan dana awam, keseluruhan lebuhraya itu diserahkan oleh PM ke-4 kepada syarikat swasta pada tahun 1988 untuk tempoh konsesi 30 tahun.

Konsesi tol asal PLUS sepatutnya tamat tahun 2018.

Tapi dilanjutkan ke tahun 2030 oleh PM ke-4 pada tahun 1999.

Kemudian ianya dilanjutkan lagi ke tahun 2038 oleh PM ke-5 pada tahun 2005 untuk membayar tuntutan gantirugi ditinggalkan oleh PM ke-4.

Dibeli balik dari tangan swasta oleh PM ke-6 pada tahun 2011 dan diletakkan di bawah kerajaan pusat (51%) dan KWSP (49%).

(Masa itu, ada 3 plaza tol dilanjutkan konsesi selama 20 tahun dari tahun 2018 ke tahun 2038 sebagai bayaran gantirugi kepada PLUS untuk tidak menaikkan kadar tol. Namun plaza-plaza tol yang dilanjutkan tempoh itu akhirnya dihapuskan juga pada tahun 2018 apabila kerajaan BN masa itu ada lebihan wang untuk membayar gantirugi)

Selepas PRU14, Kerajaan PH tidak mahu bayar satu sen pun untuk mengurangkan tol.

Oleh itu konsesi PLUS dilanjutkan lagi ke tahun 2058 oleh PM ke-7 untuk memberi diskaun 18% yang dijanji Guan Eng dalam bajet 2020.

(bermakna jumlah tempoh konsesi tol untuk PLUS yang diberi oleh PM ke-4 dan PM ke-7 ialah 70 tahun lamanya)

Dengan itu, janji "tol-free" PH menjadi tol-forever.

Cronies milk PLUS by being supplier. PLUS looks clean being owned by govt but the milking of PLUS is behind the scenes. Anything under atuk ends up being failure.
