PETALING JAYA: India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal today said his government has not imposed any curbs on imports from Malaysia and Turkey.
Reuters quoted Goyal as saying India believes in free play and equal treatment for all.
It quoted him as telling a security conference in New Delhi that the Indian government was also not contemplating any restrictions on the two countries.
Yesterday, Reuters reported that India was planning to cut some imports from Turkey and widen restrictions on Malaysia, targeting the two countries for their criticism of New Delhi’s policy towards Kashmir.
It had also been reported that India is seeking to target Malaysia after a series of criticisms by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad on New Delhi’s policies, including on the Kashmir issue and India’s new citizenship law which sparked protests across the subcontinent.
Earlier today, Reuters, quoting unnamed officials, reported that India was planning to widen its restrictions on imports from Malaysia to include petroleum, liquefied natural gas and computer parts after restricting the import of refined palm oil.
However, Goyal said any curbs will apply to all countries uniformly “and if some of the restrictions impact Malaysia, I don’t think that will be the only country impacted”.
