QUOTE Thanks to Jeff for the heads up on this, according to an article posted yesterday by Reuters, Canon is to invest 55 billion Yen ($451 million) in a new CMOS production factory at its existing site in the Kanagawa Prefecture near Tokyo. The interesting snippet in this news article comes from the following statement: "The CMOS chips will be used in both single lens reflex (SLR) models as well as in some compact models. Canon's compact cameras have to date used a different type of image sensor called a charge-coupled device (CCD)." This is interesting from an image quality point of view but will also be big news for Canon's existing sensor suppliers such as Sony. http://www.dpreview.com/news/0707/070715canoncmoscompact.aspgood news for future canon buyers, and bad news for sony (as a supplier of CCD sensors)

Maybe Canon's getting sick of replacing faulty sensors made by other companies.

anyway, it's not gonna be anytime soon, the factory will only start operation in july 2008, so the earliest we'll see canon compact with their own cmos sensor should be in 2009.

QUOTE(chucky @ Jul 17 2007, 06:52 PM) Maybe Canon's getting sick of replacing faulty sensors made by other companies. The Canon marketing ppl always brag about the advantage of CMOS & how proud they are for producing their own sensor when promoting Canon's range of dSLR. But whenever ppl ask, "then why Canon don't use CMOS in compact cameras?", they don't know how to answer.

QUOTE(AlamakLor @ Jul 18 2007, 09:56 PM) competition between manufacturers means consumer will benefit.. so we'll probably see compacts moving away from CCD to CMOS in the not-so-soon future..

why do they still make compact cameras? why not make everyone a must to only buy DSLRs? and considerably cheaper too.. just make every DSLR equivalent to the canon eos20da.
