My Redmi Note 3 finally bit the dust after 3 years.

What's the best band for buck phone now?

Back when RN3 first released, it was the king of value, rm700 for near flagship specs at the time (during that year, many brands flagship phones also only had 3gb ram, 32 gb rom)

Not really urgent, but need it latest after CNY, so I can wait for upcoming releases and price drops if need be

Prefer 5.5" form factor, used 6" phone b4, too big can't use with one hand, can't fit inside pocket

If budget die die RM600, get MiA3.

If can topup a bit, get ex-flagship like Mix2s, Pocophone, mi9 and so.

Disappointed with xiaomi products. All their products incl phone, earphones, powerbank that I own all died already.

Overrated brand imo. Specs seem good for the price but build quality is shit

If you don't mind getting 2nd hand there are some LG with good specs in Lazada/Shopee but I dunno if seller can be trusted or not.

But within that price still Xiaomi is the safest bet.

The 2nd runner up will be REALME, a subsidiary spinoff of Oppo, but you might not like how bloated it is in 2020.

If same price. Still samseng better.

The user experience of midrange phone is still not up to par than say ex-flagship 2-3 years ago.

Redmi note 8 pro may close the gap a little, but vanilla redmi note 8 sure can’t (I’m on MiA3, and despite its vanillaness and low resolution screen, the performance still not as tiptop as flagships).

I got myself another xiaomi a3 after owning redmi 1s and note 4.

Gotta say the note 4 had super poor build quality for example the power button died after 1 year+ and the paint was peeling off for no reason.

But the internal hardware is surprisingly durable, not that laggy even after almost 3 years of usage. Battery can still last for around 1 day of normal usage.

As for the a3, it only costed me rm620 brand new. Good looking phone with ok-ish spec and awesome camera. Only weakness is the 720p screen but after using it for a while, it isn't that terrible and the AMOLED is impressive when it comes to dynamic range/gamut. And then you get Android One which is free of typical MIUI bloatware.

Kinda miss some of the special features / shortcuts found on MIUI but I can't complain much when the phone is so affordable with really good camera .

I noticed they’re using different camera modules for mi A3.

The I compared two units I bought (one is for my friend), and the left one is AP while right one suppose to be MALAYSIA set (didn’t actually go verify it).

Hmmm any idea if the difference is major ? Mine was AP set and I really like the camera even though I'm used to full frame DLSR quality.

The wide angle is super nice to have and produce decent results in good light .

May be you can cross check with mine above. The yellow screen is AP. Just dial *#*#miui#*#* in the diaper then click top right for hardware.

Mine somehow I don’t quite convinced with the image quality, when I used to take notes on whiteboards like 5-10m away. My main phone iphone8 did it better here.

On MiA3, u notice the auto brightness is quite slow? And seriously xiaomi why no always on display / always on ambient display for notification. Its the freaking reason i buy amoled phone.

It was impulse buy since phone rosak and no phone. Walk into xiaomi store, love the small form factor (by today standard) and amoled for rm899. Screen is fine, till I put side by side with wife a50, then notice the pixelation. But still love it.

Edit: and the ir blaster, didnt expect that.

iPhone 8 is still a relatively modern phone with good camera so Im guessing maybe your standard is a little higher than mine.

Yeap, the auto brightness is quite weak. Even at full brightness the screen just isn't bright enough, even my note 4 is a lot brighter albeit not being an AMOLED.

Agreed on the ambient display, and there's no way for you to double tap to wake the phone from sleep or enter camera mode without unlocking the phone (you can do it with 2 clicks of power button but it's just additional wear and tear of hardware).

Small form factor is one of the reason I chose it, most of today's phone is so big and uncomfortable to fit into pocket. I do notice that it is quite a dense feeling phone, even heavier than my previous note 4.

It’s good, but don’t worth over RM700 I would say.

I bought mine AP for RM547.

Pixelation not really a major problem for me though as I’m used to the PPI of IP8 and viewing distance of >20cm.

But this camera sensor is used in pretty much all mid-high end phones launched in the past 1.5 years. So I have some high expectations for it prior to getting it.

It’s cause MIUI is in control with the high brightness mode, thus AndroidONE don’t have it.

Let’s wait till next (or hopefully further future) version of AndroidONE and see if it will have high brightness mode integrated into it.
