That's also my setup more or less. Digital output mode on the TV is throughput only. So the Xbox will just send the sound to the receiver. My receiver does show Armos at all times.
I think the Xbox does do the actual decoding. Not bitstream to the amp. It's like how if you play a Bluray movie with PS3, PS3 will do the decoding and output to the amp as LPCM. Back then I didn't get this. I thought movies played with PS3 is not as good as using Bluray player, because I couldn't see the DOLBY ATMOS indicator on my amp. In actuality the sound quality would be the same. It's just that the PS3 couldn't bitstream lossless audio.
i see. just now i did some experiment tho. when my series x setting is dolby atmos home theater, if for game with dolby atmos support (gears 5, ori & wisps), my denon x1600h will show dolby atmos. If i play game like destiny 2 without dolby atmos, it show dolby surround, which is actually should be LPCM input with Dobly MAT 2.0, because i can hear my atmos height module got sound coming out, and i already switch off dolby virtualizer, which if no atmos signal it will not use the atmos module.
series x will always upmix audio into atmos if ur setting is dolby atmos, which i think is not a good move. Cos it can be hit or miss, just like auto HDR. The only way is to switch to dolby digital whenever playing non native atmos game.
weird thing for LG TV is, if i set my TV to auto, it will show dolby atmos at my receiver all the time, but i get bad audio lag even in menu lol. and i cant set audio delay to minus on my receiver nor my tv. If set to passthrough, non atmos will be LPCM with Dolby MAT 2.0, it is actually okay. At least it is not PCM stereo then im good lol.
