sorry to interrupt.. need some advice  notworthy.gif ... what kind of setup should i use for beach fishing... rod.. reels.. line.. hooks... the kind of baits suitable.. and how the fishing is done (thinking of fishing for small fishes like kerapu.. anything that can be fished from the shore) would be very grateful too if anyone could suggest any place around perak, selangor, melaka or ns good for this type of fishing. thank you!   icon_rolleyes.gif

Bro KudePadi,
Apart of what have been shared with bro Q, you can always do surf-casting at the beach side. smile.gif

Rod: Surf rod with 14feet(min) 21feet(max)
Reel: Surf reel with 30lb mono or braided...Prefer mono. Suggested reel Tica Dolphin 10,000

Cast out with a sinker(without leader + hooks + bait) then clip your leader line onto the main line. It will swing downwards to the sinker part.

As for Bro Q's method, it's highly recommended. Use a soft plastic like grub also can. Use the smalled weight that you can find. Prepare a running sinker method. Cast out! Let it sink to the bottom, crank in very very slowly. Once you feel a tug, you strike! This is to prevent the grouper from going into their holes. Worry not, it will not get snagged, as the weight used is very small and easily drifted by the current.

Bro Ice,
The hooks that A Cong used is Gamakatsu Octopus.

The long shanks prevent the bigger fish bite off the kevlar.

I would not say that it's the hook that improve the strike rate, it's the method that he is using that improves the strike rate.

Hook is just a hook, whether it's long or short shank. It does not contribute to the strike rate or action of the lure. smile.gif

Added on July 16, 2007, 3:29 pmBro Q is right on the usage of long shank or short shank. But it's meant for bait, not jigging smile.gif

Added on July 16, 2007, 3:30 pmTo add on, some of the long shanks are meant to keep the hooks inside the bait, in such that the bait reacts normally rather than short shanks which the hooks protude out of the bait's shape.

your 6th and 7th guide is referring from bottom or from top?

If from top, you dont have to worry about it.

If from bottom, then you need to re-mark the spot. Have you done the under wrap? Awaiting for you to epox. smile.gif

It's just to ensure the line is in-line to the curve of the rod nia... smile.gif

For the 1st and 2nd guide(kira from bottom), you can just simply estimate as it does not need to follow the rod parabolic curve. Unlike BC rods, the 1st and 2nd guide is to ensure that the line flow from spool to rod is smooth nia.

Using spinning reels, the line guide of your bail arm rotates, at certain rotation, the line is in-line with the rod, at certain rotation, the line will creates abrasion with the guide. Different concept from BC rods, the guides ensures that the line is in-line with the rod, not just that, the guides also play an important role to ensure the line does not hit the blanks to create abrasion. Thus BC rods need more guides compared to spinning rods.

Alternatively, spiral wrapped blanks came into picture to avoid the line from hitting the blanks. In fact, the line can never hit the blank with spiral wrap. smile.gif As i build my spiral wrap rod, i was thinking the line to be twisted while casting, thus creating abrasion to the guide and shorten the casting distance. To my surprice, it have no effect at all. Not saying that it will have further distance or shorter distance, it seems the same to me in the sense of casting strength, difficulties and rod swing. smile.gif

The 1st and 2nd guide placement is VERY important if your rod can bend a full round. Otherwise, it's estimated length from each guide.

It's hardly that some rod builder to spend additional work just to have the chevron wrap.

It's not justified as the guide underwrap is not length thus increase the difficulties to do the chevron smile.gif
