Japanese started their industry by copying and innovating. Eventually the became leaders in some areas. The PRC is taking that same path in this sense.

The math and science prowess will lay down the groundwork for the more creative and enterprising counterpart to thrive. Even now, most of US most successful companies are depending on oversea industrial might or talent pool to maintain where they are now.
