The results are in for the OECD’s latest global test of 15-year-olds in math, science, and reading. The test, known as PISA (for Programme for International Student Assessment), is administered every three years and used—by some—to measure which countries are best preparing their students for the future.

Once again, Asian countries came out on top. In the latest test, China and Singapore ranked first and second, respectively, in math, science, and reading. Elsewhere, Estonia is noteworthy for its performance, ranking highly in all three subjects.

Mainland China is measured by taking an average of four provinces: Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang. Some argue that “China” shouldn’t be represented by just a few eastern regions, but the OECD says that each of them is comparable in size to many Western countries, and have a combined population of over 180 million. (Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan also appear separately in the rankings.)

What’s more, in the four provinces of mainland China that participated in the study, the 10% most disadvantaged students showed better reading skills than the most advantaged students in some countries, and better performance than the average student in OECD countries.

The OECD is trying to change the test to be about more than academics, in part to encourage countries to view education beyond traditional subjects. In the latest test, it assessed global competency, asking students to express how they relate to others and what they think of their lives and their future; in the next test, in 2021, it will assess creative thinking.

It also regularly asks students questions about their wellbeing, including measures of belonging and life satisfaction.

Results from the latest wellbeing study are concerning. Across OECD countries, only about two-thirds of students said that they were satisfied with their lives, a share that shrank by five percentage points between 2015 and 2018. Almost a quarter of students reported being bullied at least a few times a month and 6% reported always feeling sad. In almost every education system, girls expressed a greater fear of failure than boys, even when they outperformed boys in reading by a large margin.

The OECD says the point of PISA is to help education systems improve by offering data and transparency. “The aim with PISA was not to create another layer of top-down accountability, but to help schools and policy makers shift from looking upwards within the bureaucracy towards looking outwards to the next teacher, the next school, the next country,” wrote Andreas Schleicher in the report with the latest batch of test results.

But PISA has its detractors, including those who believe it tries to do too much, that it distorts what is important, and creates an arms race in education. In 2014, more than 100 academics around the world called for a moratorium on PISA testing, citing the problem Schleicher claims he wants to fix: An over-reliance on testing and a tendency to recommend simple solutions for complex problems. They wrote:

''The new Pisa regime, with its continuous cycle of global testing, harms our children and impoverishes our classrooms, as it inevitably involves more and longer batteries of multiple-choice testing, more scripted ‘vendor’-made lessons, and less autonomy for teachers.''

Angel Gurría, secretary-general of the OECD, disagrees. “PISA is not only the world’s most comprehensive and reliable indicator of students’ capabilities, it is also a powerful tool that countries and economies can use to fine-tune their education policies,” he wrote in the report.

Most of malaysia's teachers suck so.......

He was commenting on Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statement on introducing to schools a teaching method using video recordings by selected teachers,

“We try to ease teaching because not all teachers are the same. What we want is to benefit from the good teachers, record their lessons and it would be shared with teachers in other schools. These teachers will then guide and explain to their students,” said Dr Mahathir.

Chinese students far out-stripped peers in every other country in survey of reading, math and science ability, underscoring a reserve of future economic strength and the struggle of advanced economies to keep up.

The OECD’s triennial study of 15 year-old students across the world found that the four Chinese provinces tested -- Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang -- outperformed in science and mathematics, even if household income is well below members’ average. In reading, the 10% most disadvantaged Chinese students tested had better skills than the OECD average.

"The quality of their schools today will feed into the strength of their economies tomorrow,” OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria said.

The PISA study of 600,000 students in 79 countries shines a light on the difficultly of improving education, sometimes irrespective of the resources that are dedicated to it. That appears to be particularly problematic for OECD countries that have increased spending on primary and secondary students by more than 15% in the past decade.

"It is disappointing that most OECD countries saw virtually no improvement in the performance of their students since PISA was first conducted in 2000,” Gurria said.

The report also highlights disparities in educational achievement depending on socio-economic background. In some countries, even where government spending on education is high, the background of a student still plays a significant role in their educational outcomes.

Multi-race in Chinese School!

On average, 12% of the variation in student reading performance within each country was associated with socio-economic status. In several European countries, including France and Germany, that measure rises above 17%. - Bloomberg

That's not a problem, the Chinese is too smart to circumvent it, anyway later!

As the Confucianism proverb said, 'When you're successful, there will be alot of red-eye trying to spoil you, using your wits and learned to win them'!

That's what I like about Chinese school, as it teaches their students all these skills with education!

Coz we asian lack of refinement.
Example.
Our educator show us the ball and said the ball is round.
We spoonfeed with all ball is round.
US educator show the class all type of ball and tell the student to speak out what they see.

It is because of the difference in culture. Mainland China student's study culture is not something Malaysian Chinese can match. The level of competition there is just insane. We are just too used to comparing ourselves to people in wheelchair and that gives us a false sense of achievement.

Even Taiwanese students find it hard to compete with Mainland students.

Sometimes, doing good in math or science =/= creativeness or business prowess.

Like creating website / app like Facebook, Twitter etc, no need super advance science or math skills. Just programming knowledge, but most big websites all started by Americans.

The Secret of Chinese success (Rahsia Kejayaan) => Education

That why the Chinese voter in Tanjung Piai gave a good trashing to PH candidate for daring to mess up the education of their child.

Sometimes, doing good in math or science =/= creativeness or business prowess.

Like creating website / app like Facebook, Twitter etc, no need super advance science or math skills. Just programming knowledge, but most big websites all started by Americans.
*
Japanese started their industry by copying and innovating. Eventually the became leaders in some areas. The PRC is taking that same path in this sense.

The math and science prowess will lay down the groundwork for the more creative and enterprising counterpart to thrive. Even now, most of US most successful companies are depending on oversea industrial might or talent pool to maintain where they are now.

Asian is famous for being math & science wizard....but but so far still no worthy invention made by so called Asian math & science wizard except tik-tok, 5G & alibaba...you clever godlike level but still cannot beat US in tech & invention.

China just started to developed and industrialized after more than a century of regression, poverty, war, foreign power intervention and stuff. In 90s, China is still a shithole like some African country. What they achieved in 30 years is truly stunning. They became the largest economy in the world, world class infrastructure etc (China started high speed rail in 2008 before Olympics. Now they have more than any other countries in the world combine). They are unstoppable at this rate and US won't sit well with this development and thus doing every thing to undermine their progress.
It just a matter of time before they dominate every aspect of new inventions and technology. U can see that in Huawei 5G, Darkside moon landing, AI and military equipment. And it all started with education.

People can critic the chinese kiasu, but this kiasu is why they success. Which tuition center have good teacher, cepat pergi hantar anak. Good books, cepat beli, even already got other reference book or even if expensive. That gives a lot of stress to the kids, but they are willing to spend for the kids.

Of course not every child can be a good student, but generally it just put an idea for them to do better.

Japan also long time lost their tech competitiveness to US already.

What industry that Japanese is still the leader - cars, anime, video games?

Even for car industry Japan will lose out to USA if they can't make self driving car.

Anime, video games - sure, but that more to culture rather than science or maths.

Schools in China and vernacular schools in Malaysia are pretty good in general, but there are still many aspects they can improve upon, and it would be wise for them to update their syllabuses, teaching methods and learning techniques for the 21st century.

Never stop progressing and improving!

The kid must studied in Kindergarten that teach Mandarin before enroll into SRJKC and the parent also must learn some basic mandarin (Internet/Youtube) to teach their kid.

Once the kid know how to walk (Basic), they can learn how to run (Intermediate/Advance) by themselves with encouragement from parent.

Fact: In 2015, Malaysia Gov interfere with PISA Test by directing the selected normal school to withdraw from the test and elite school was tested. End up PISA drop Malaysia from the ranking altogether.
