QUOTE(ah liew @ Dec 3 2019, 12:19 PM) Hi guys, kindly advise, shell engine oil as an example. What is the difference between 5w30 semi & 5w30 fully? Regards. The most important thing is manufacturers approval and third party approvals Semi can have higher performance than fully if the right add pack is used. Base oil is irrelevant in day to day usage. |

QUOTE(ah liew @ Dec 3 2019, 12:19 PM) Hi guys, kindly advise, shell engine oil as an example. What is the difference between 5w30 semi & 5w30 fully? Regards. HX7 has lower spec approval in MB 229.3 which MB recommends 10000 - 15000 km or less oci , whereas Ultra has higher spec approval in MB 229.5 which MB recommends up to 30000 km oci under conditions specified . In MB engines calling for MB 229.3 , the owner can use Ultra MB 229.5 , however in MB engines calling for MB 229.5 , the owner can't use HX7 MB 229.3 as intended . IMHO, for typical Asian engines at 10000 - 12000 km oci there is no difference between the two in longevity up to 300000 or 400000 km . However if for extended oci of 20000 - 30000 km, HX7 MB 229.3 probably couldn't make it in longevities whereas Ultra MB 229.5 maybe fine , basing on metal wear limits adopted by some laboratories and/or OEM's . Edit:VOA's attached . This post has been edited by zeng: Dec 3 2019, 01:57 PM |
