5G has download speed of more than 1Gb per second, can we replace the wired/WiFi network with it?

For some maybe, who use the Internet casually and some streaming. 1Gbps is peak speed. Real-world usage may be just around 100Mbps.

Celcom 4G at my area speed about 5mbps. Wonder is the 5G will have better speed which is 6mbps?

Like 4G, it depend on how many people using, and which band it at.

If low band like UniFi Mobile band 5, then far coverage but slower speed, if something like band 40, then should be 1Gbps, as it can be only you using it on this time, this moment.
You can get more if you get better phone with better modem, for example, they has compared and found out that, the balong 5000 is faster than the Kirin 990, but well, unlike Kirin 990 you need to having a bigger size and RAM reserved for balong 5000.

Still, after you got your 5G phone now, it will still depend on how many people using it, like in the past when 4G just deployed, it is 30M(or something), after more than 5 years when everyone having a 4G device, it will drop to, well, 5M like you said, or even lower.

But, as long as they don't remove the device for 2G 3G 4G, the speed for 3G 4G will increasing back, just like your WiFi router got 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz, IF your UniFi is 300M, then surely you can get 2.4Ghz 50Mbps and 5Ghz 130Mbps on 2 different devices at the same time. thumbsup.gif

Still, there is a bit different on 5G, there is SA and NSA, SA means purely on 5G, no need 4G anymore, NSA means 5G for data + 4G for communication with control center etc. icon_rolleyes.gif
And also, they will sharing the same backbone for 4G and 5G.

More over, will something like Digi Unlimited Plan limited to 2G/3G/4G and asking you to pay more for using 5G?
Or maybe they will just perform speed limit when you are using 5G?

They still need to cover up the 5G deployment cost, and what will be the solution, no one know yet.

Yes, if you got the money. laugh.gif

To let the 5G replace the WiFi for 1Gbps for like each person, first, you need to get the whole apartment to pay for the 5G equipment that just build for your apartment, then antenna for each part of it.
Then, how's Celcom, Digi, Maxis, Umobile, UniFi Mobile sharing the same 5G equipment? Did they just redeploy the 5G equipment again and again for your apartment? shocking.gif

I think it is less likely to happen for the sharing part in Malaysia, but it is already happen in China, where the weaker one (China Unicom and Telecom) build and share the 5G equipment together, which they just build at their own area that having more 4G equipment, and with a ratio la.

Still, it is more costly than the current Fiber equipment that already deploy on your apartment or house area, why not just change the WiFi Router for upgrading to WiFi 6?
This is less cost than building 5G equipment for a few apartment, easy to upgrade the WiFi by just swapping the Router, and much more stable connection, along with better security and privacy. icon_rolleyes.gif

And more over, the cost for upgrading is on your side, not on ISP side. tongue.gif

When do we expect 5G to be available in Malaysia? Do I need to change my device/ SIM card to enjoy 5G connectivity?

Substantial 5G rollout is expected to be around 2021 for two main reasons:
- The spectrum to be used for 5G has not been determined yet by the authorities;
- 5G-compatible devices are not yet available locally.

We will certainly make compatible devices/ SIM cards available with the launch of our 5G Network.

With current speed cap of 64kbps for those who have exceeded the small quota from our telcos, I will say No. It's not gonna replace other forms of connection.

Well, get a better phone, or I should say, phone with better 4G modem? thumbsup.gif

But yup, this is what's happen when lot of people heavy depend on 4G network as their daily internet access, the same will happen to 5G.
Just like a better 4G modem like huawei B618 with good antenna placement can get higher speed, also including locking the band, having CA etc, but still, depend on how many people using it. icon_rolleyes.gif

You cannot only benchmark speed, latency is also key.

2.4GHz Wi-Fi
Widespread standard as 802.11b/g/n

Many people can't have more 50Mbps on this band because they did not disable legacy standard (802.11b/g)

Having 802.11b/g/n enabled, make wireless very slow and Router CPU had to work hard to manage b/g and n

My self can achieve 2.4GHz Wi-Fi @ 100Mbps:
1. Disable 802.11b/g support, let 802.11n ONLY
2. 40MHz Bandwidth

5GHz Wi-Fi
5GHz has many standard as 802.11a/n/ac/ax.

802.11a limited at 20MHz bandwidth, this first Wireless Standard
802.11n limited at 40MHz bandwidth,
802.11ac limited at 80MHz bandwidth,
802.11ax support 160MHz bandwidth, this is new standard, top speed 3.5Gbps @ 1x1 or 14Gbps @ 4x4

Interesting about 802.11ax, it as 4G LTE feature like Carrier Aggregation, OFDA, or OFDMA, OFDMA (multiple access).

With Carrier Aggregation, 802.11ax can use 2.4GHz + 5GHz for MAXIMUM SPEED!

5GHz vs 5G
5GHz only for indoor Wireless.
Many people believe they have 5G Internet from Unifi, that's not 5G, that 5GHz,
Unifi have tendency make noob user more confused, they simply put _5G@unifi as their SSID name. This is stupid!

60GHz Wi-Fi
This also called as 802.11ad, 7Gbps @ 10x10
Must have Line of Sight, useful in small office.
Known as Wi-Gig, not so popular.

Wi-Fi vs Cellular Data
I don't think Wi-Fi get replaced by Cell Data, thus Wi-Fi will adapt some 4G/5G standard like Carrier Aggregation, OFDA and OFDMA.

5G allow more connected device, still, Wi-Fi help reduce number of connected cell once we using home or office Wi-Fi. Fair.

Also,
Wi-Fi is User freedom, 2.4/5/60GHz is free to use radio wave, no need license even you making PTP Wireless Bridge.
Cell Data is Government manage and allocate to each provider, which Band and how big Bandwidth.

.
No.

Remember that the last mile Internet connection of all 4G/5G mobile broadband(= over-the-air) must mostly go through fixed/immobile Fiber cables(= over land) and onwards through Fiber submarine cables(= over-seas) to other parts of the world.
....... Mobile telcos have to pay fixed telcos for Internet data and bandwidth at wholesale prices. Mobile broadband subscribers have to pay "exorbitant" retail prices for Internet data and bandwidth.

4G/5G phones --> 4G/5G cell towers --> Fiber cable networks(eg TM HSBB Fiber) --> Fiber submarine cables --> www.

1Gbps is only for 5G mmWave(= 24GHz to 86GHz) which are mostly deployed in city-densely populated areas. Outside of these areas, 5G mid-band(= 600MHz to 6GHz) are deployed = about 400Mbps only. 5G mid-band is similar to 4G.
