SEREMBAN: The government should allow more competition in the Internet services provider sector for cheaper and better connectivity for everyone, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan (pic).

The Umno number two said the government also needed to urgently look into increasing Internet access, particularly in unserved and under-served areas as well as provide free data for education, entrepreneurship and public services for certain segments of society.

"The government has to consider encouraging the establishment of Internet service providers focusing on innovation – especially in rural areas.

"A glimpse into our education system shows we have been unable to systematically and seamlessly jump into digital mode during this Covid-19 pandemic.

"Too much time has been wasted. Sending homework and assignments through WhatsApp and email is not online learning," he said in a statement on Thursday (April 16).

Mohamad said the high cost of Internet access has led to many parents using money meant to put food on the table to purchase Internet data instead.

He said as such, it was necessary for the Education Ministry to provide a clear vision on how the country's education system should be managed productively if the current situation were to continue.

"A holistic digital system has to be a national agenda that needs to be prioritised and implemented radically.

"The government also has to provide a single centralised and integrated digital platform in which contact with any ministry or government agency can be made online through a single portal, account, system and channel," he said.

Mohamad said this initiative could not be put on hold any longer as a digital platform would reduce bureaucracy, maximise transparency and increase efficiency.

The former Negri Sembilan mentri besar said these issues needed to be addressed urgently as the country would continue to be haunted by pandemics and pathogen outbreaks as well as the climate crisis.

"The greatest challenge we face today is how the government functions in times of crisis.

"This is important because the government is the only entity we can rely on to secure our livelihood and security in this extraordinary time," he said, adding that this was why the public delivery system must quickly shift towards a completely digital platform.

Mohamad said the Covid-19 pandemic was a lesson for all that any governmental system must be crisis-proof.

300mbps RM79/month for 50" TV, not free. 500mbps RM1/month for 65" TV. I don't need the TV, so its not worthwhile to jump to Maxis unless got special discount.

TM posts improved earnings in Q3

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd reported a quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q) improvement in group revenue and earnings due to improved contribution across its product lines and the success of its cost optimisation initiatives.

In a statement, the telco said group revenue was up 3.8% q-o-q to RM2.69bil from RM2.59bil in the second quarter of the year on the back of higher contribution from voice, Internet and data services.

Group reported earnings before interest and tax was 7% higher q-o-q to RM456.2mil versus RM42.6.3mil previously on the back of lower operating cost due to the group's cost optimisation initiatives.

This subsequently led to a 19.9% increase in group profit after tax and non-controlling interests (Patami) from RM274.7mil in the preceding quarter to RM329.5mil.

"“We are pleased to report another quarter of growth across all key financial metrics – revenue and

profits – despite the challenging environment in Q3.

"Our efforts in cost optimisation continue to yield results with a healthy EBIT and a strong Patami.

"As we enter the ninth month of the Covid-19 pandemic, our priority continues to be the safety and health of our ‘Warga TM’ while continuously delivering connectivity and solutions excellence to our broad customer base," said Telekom group CEO Imri Mokhtar.

The group's Unifi service posted 6.2% growth to 1,65 million subsctibers, bringing its total broadband customer base to 2.26 million.

According to Imri, the group achieved a convergence penetration of three services or more of 58% in Telekom households, the highest since 2018 as more Malaysians turn to digital living-working in the new norm.

"At TM ONE, we further cemented our leadership position as the digital enabler for enterprise and public sector customers with enterprise-grade connectivity and end-to-end cloud offerings.

"We look forward to more collaborations with strategic

partners and customers towards establishing a solid foundation for a more Digital Malaysia,” he added.

Meanwhile, Telekom continues to colalborate with industry players in Malaysia and globally on the wholesale front.

Managed to get RM99 package for 100mbps, no hypptv, no free calls (perpetual discount), renewed contract 24 months, device 1 year warranty. contract suppose to end next month, submitted termination on unifi portal and they called and offer.

RM129 for 100mbps with Ruby pack which I doesn't watch on my mobile at all.

Phone is there. Just no free minutes like last time which I don’t need it as well.

After 7 working days excluding Saturday Sunday and Public holiday they will call. No new device but warranty extended 1 year despite contract for 2 years.

Competitors offer are more attractive.

TM just changed my package to RM99 100mbps Turbo Super Value (Broadband) today.

according to their telemarketing is no free calls. but after they have completed my order it shows STD20 (Free). no unifi box also. anyway, need to wait for next month to see the actual bill. my contract supposed to end next month but now renewed for 24 months.
