just wondering how many helmets do you guys own. everytime i see a nice design, feel like buying but its a total waste of money.

i have one open face for nearby travel and a full face helmet.
*
I have 1 fullface LS2 and 1 modular MHR helmet.

LS2 is used less and less now as i prefer the modular helmet more.. Suprisingly i feel that the modular is less windy compared to the fullface helmet ๐Ÿคจ

I did get one open face helmet that the shop gave for free when i bought my bike..but i haven't used it and dont plan to..

If it is ECE rated, it should be good.

Sharp rating is more rigorous and it costs a lot more to the manufacturer to send helmets in for the organization to test, so you'll typically only see this on high end models esp those that are used for racing.

ECE rating is mandatory for all helmets sold in Europe, but not in the US. ECE tests are done by the organization and are also more rigorous compared to DOT.

DOT is trickier. I saw videos explaining that DOT operates on an honor system, where manufacturers are allowed to put the DOT label on helmets they *feel* meet the standard and *intend* to test themselves. Bottom line, DOT helmets are not tested and verified by a regulatory body or organization, which is why you're likely to see this on lesser helmet brands.

I wonder where SIRIM sits in the scheme of things.
*
SIRIM is based on ECE test and is also done by them. So if it is SIRIM approved you can be assured of its safety. Better to take a helmet that is SIRIM approved without DOT compared to a helmet with only DOT

Just bought an LS2 Valiant II helmet.. sigh its too noisy even with earplugs.. anyone else have this helmet and have similar experience?

At 80 the wind noise is like me riding 120 with a cheapo MHR modular helmet..

What kind of bike u are riding? Any wind shield?
*
Zontes 310X1. Has windscreen and have added an extension screen. The wind noise seems to be seeping in somehow..

But regardless on the same bike with different helmet this LS2 is worse compared to my MHR ๐Ÿ˜•

Invest in a good helmet next time.

Quiet helmet as I know are hjc rpha 70, shoei gtair, schubert c40 pro.

I'm using rpha 70.
No regrets.

Sometimes a noisy helmet (wind noise) could be also due to wrong size or wrong fitment.

The valiant is known to be a loud helmet.

Most modulars are, given the clearances needed to allow for the chin bar to open easily. The more seams and openings, the more wind will seep in. The visor sealing on most modulars are also not as tight as normal full faces. The Valiant is also very aerodynamically inefficient and very wide, which means it catches air in all the wrong places.
A quiet modular is difficult to engineer, which is why Shubert's are so expensive, and also very stuffy.

If you want a quiet helmet, the Rpha 70 and Scorpoin 1400ST is both light and quiet and decently priced. I have the Rpha 70. The Rpha 90 is also fairly quiet for a modular. But then you are looking at a 2k lid.
As Skyblu has alluded to, poor fitment also contributes to wind noise. If you inadvertently bought a round headshape helmet for your oval head (as most of us have), then a lot of noise will seep in via the loose fitting cheek pads and neck roll, even before considering you got the right size, Most new helmet buyers dont realize that a new helmet fits uncomfortably tight until it breaks in and end up buying one size too big.

just for comparison, my Rhpa 70 is quieter than my MT Atom modular with earplugs.
*
It is a intermediate oval - which is typical for LS2 helmets. My head is snug with the helmet - Which makes the loud noise even more confusing. Hence why i am asking for feedback to those who have it..

I get that modular helmets are louder than a full face helmet. But like i said this helmet is louder than my el cheapo MHR modular helmet which i didnt expect at all. Reviews of the LS2 valiant 2 has it quieter than the original so yeah..

On your next ride.
Try this
While riding, bring your shoulders up ... High enough to cover the lower opening of your helmet.
If the noise gets muffled .  There's the problem.  Cheek and side paddings too thin?
*
Will try that on my next ride..

I wonder how u guys wear earplugs until becomes louder than other helmets?
I'm using foam type, and rolled, and pressed deep into ear canal. Almost no sound comes through.
Use the same foam type.. Just a simple comparison really -> put earplugs in -> ride with Helmet A -> stop change to helmet B -> note the difference..

That's basically it. In any case I ride with an earplug almost exclusively, so when a helmet is noisier, its noticeable.

It depends on how loud the wind noise.
Faster you go the louder it gets

Good thing is that I hardly ride at high speed.

On the highway 120kmh is good enough.

I tried wearing ear plugs , but stopped .  The pressure build up in my ears is not comfy .  And it's too quiet in which I don't really like, felt dangerous.
*
Maybe the plugs you use is too big hence the high pressure build up..

Anyways i would always suggest riding with an earplug. 92db exposure for 30 minutes is all it takes to get hearing loss. And 92db is not too far fatched to be exposed to while riding.

NB: higher dBs would take far less time to get hearing damage.

I'm thinking of maybe wearing earphones when I ride.
since it's always connected to bluetooth, can listen to songs/navigation.. also quite sound proof so kinda works the same as an earplug i guess? Not say fully block everything out but then like you said, if too quiet, it seems very weird
*
Earphones dont block noise at all - even worse with active noise cancellation since it blasts the same noise that is at 180 degree phase. Which means your ears get exposed to the loud noise even more. If you want to hear songs and navigation a basic Cardo Spirit (<RM400) + earplugs would be the way to go.

Does the Cardo Spirit able to join in into other Cardo units?
Also, with earplugs in, won't it block off the sound coming from the speakers of the Cardo Spirit?
Sorry might be newbie question but 0 experience on this so yeah
*
Its ok. I also just started using the spirit less than 2 weeks ago. The spirit will allow you to connect to other cardo units via bluetooth. But the range will be around 400m only with clear line of sight. I use it to talk with my wife (she's riding as pillion).

You can still hear sounds coming from the speakers. The speakers are directly resting on your ears under the helmet foam. You will not get any bass from the speakers but its good enough to hear voices and music.

The earplugs really remove the wind noises which are generally high frequency range. But all other noises are still audiable albeit slightly lower than what we are used to. If you do plan on getting something like a Cardo, i would really recommend getting used to riding with the earplugs first and getting used to the lower sounding noises you get. It should take only a couple of rides to get used to. After that you can add the cardo/music. This way you will not immediately feel like you've lost spatial noise.

So a quick update on this. The wind noise is still loud no matter what I do. But the helmet did make me realize I wasn't wearing the earplugs properly doh.gif .

With the plugs in proper at 120kmh the wind noise is acceptable, not as loud as I initially complaint about. In fact I could comfortably wear the helmet as an open face helmet with minimal wind noise heard up to 80-90 kmh thumbup.gif

So I'm quite happy with the helmet now
