Well, since I upgraded my Flickr's account, might as well do something with the pictures there. Snapped all of these using my trusty S3 IS. I know I got problems with:

1. Composition
2. Focus
3. Exposure

Hrmm..wait..that is like problems with everything! Oh well, bash and praise (I doubt it) all you want smile.gif

My first offering to this gallery are my random shots of flowers in Japan:

Saturation of the pictures is not consistent. #3 is well taken. Can do better with composition as all are cropped not with respect to 3:2 or 4:3 ratio.

Rather than shooting lens cap with the new camera, tried shooting something that were around my house:

1. Tortoise God! Just walked past my garden and thought the tortoise perched there made a pretty interesting picture. He seems pretty happy with his picture as well...

2. Submitted this for the Lensa Malaysia forum challenge. Theme is Broken. I also tried using manual focusing for this shot.

yeah its probably too dark. Ermm....dad designed the room so have to live with "lack" of lights atm.

Should have cranked up the ISO a bit higher. Have an ISO400 shot which was brighter but was slightly off focus for that one.

EV sudah naik until +5. Cannot naik anymore. Its probably the wrong ISO. ISO200 is way too low for my room. The ISO400 picture looks like the picture Henry taikor PP for me.

Just that the ISO400 shot I took was OOF so didn't post here. Focused on the body instead of the face.

Try adjusting the level.

Isn't this looks better?
user posted image

Added on July 25, 2007, 11:06 pmYou leave too much empty space on the right of your histogram. So the colour looks flat. What I did was just pull the white tab to the left, near the right tail of the histogram, and pull the left tab slightly to the right, pass that "clip" area.

Your flowers composition is fine, but the DOF is not shallow enough, so that the background is kinda disturbing. You can improve this by using a longer focal length (zoom longer).

DOF is shallow but the place was kinda dark.

It was either going to be higher ISO (could have gone that way), lower shutter speed (no way with my shaky hands), or bigger aperture (sacrificing DOF).

Will try other combinations the next time smile.gif

Thanks for the comments.

no lar...from what i see people take photos of food de in mags and recipe book, the whole plate of food in on focus...except the background or plate is blurred...so i suggested you lower your aperture...with that you no need worry so much bout lighting and can go higher on shutter speed also...my opinion that is... tongue.gif

Haha food in mags and recipe book has huge amounts of lighting wei...

But I agree that DOF is shallow. Smaller aperture might have given me more depth but as I sight, no light.

@Henry Hrmmm flashhhh....good idea tongue.gif

The problem is level. The color is simple too flat. Check your histogram. Do notice that there is a blank spot on the right, that's the reason causing the color to look flat and dark. A simple level adjustment will fix it.

I shall at least look something like this, if not better.

Erm.. DOF problem? For which pic? 2nd pic?

Coz the keyboard pic I was really aiming for that effect. Just wanted to highlight the Apple key.

As for the first pic, err black...glow...not right?

Hrmm I did adjust the histogram. Maybe not enough smile.gif Thanks Henry...

Ahh thanks. Yep the laptop was the main focus.

Maybe should have used a different lens for it. 18-55mm would have done better I think.

Overall for pics no 2-5, compo could be better. Why not shooting it on horizontal instead of vertical? Did u see there a small rod distraction on pic no 2 and pic 5 seems noisy. wink.gif

Noticed the rod after taking it. Could have been more hardworking post processing it but colleagues have been pressing for the pictures.

Could have put it thru Neat Image to take away the noise and cropping could have been better for the pic with the rod.

Admittedly, the pictures could have been way better smile.gif

Heh ori except for the 2nd pic. That wan was warmified by Picasa. And the Macau shots were taken with D40, not the D300.

Yeah the Kratos is pretty much a bad example of taking a shot. tongue.gif The lazyman style. Put it there and shoot. Making my own Macro mini-studio so will try it again.

And the D300 makes an appearance at GACC 2008. Nothing special though, jst took a break here and there from teaching boardgames to run around snapping random stuff.

After shooting GACC 2008 in Melaka, the first stop after the event is for dinner. And since my friends haven't tasted satay celup before, it is time to bring them to experience it.

We decided to go to Restoran Ban Lee Siang which is not as famous as Capitol Satay but apparently BLS is nicer

user posted image

For those who don't know what is Satay Celup, it is essentially your "lok lok" except with peanut and chili sauce. One of the best things to celup is the simple bread and cucumber combo

user posted image

Another favourite is the yu tiaw as it can soak in the spices and it is best eaten hot, just make sure you don't burn your tongue!

user posted image

Other than that, the stuff you can celup is no different from your roadside "lok lok" van

user posted image

user posted image

So, the next time you are in Melaka, make sure you get some satay celup!

And here we go, this time it was mom's birthday and we went to a simple Chinese restaurant in Bukit Mayang Mas. It is called Restoran Wong Poh.

The shots weren't too fantastic as there were quite a few people there eager to eat and I had to compose quickly and hope all my other settings were correct. Needless to say, some shots were unfortunately over exposed.

1. Mom says must eat sayur coz its good for health. Only problem is I ate a lot and still don't know what vegetable it is at the end of the day
user posted image

2. Birthday means noodles! The first is Lala Fried Beehoon!
user posted image

3. Hokkien Fried Mee which is pretty normal. I prefer the one at Jalan 222
user posted image

4. This is Frog Leg with Brand's Essence of Chicken sauce. Quite bland actually, not much flavour. I think I focused on the sayur instead sad.gif
user posted image

5. This is Butter Prawn. Eh wait, Butter Crabs! Its good stuff and its with cheese. Only gripe is they don't really crush the shells well so have to work more to get to the meat
user posted image

6. Another crabby dish, this time its the normal and usual Chilli Crab. Good with fried bread smile.gif
user posted image

7. Marmite pork spareribs. Its sweet, its soft, its yummy!
user posted image

Thats all for now smile.gif

Well, obviously it was an important day for my sister and definitely her photo moments were captured not entirely by me. She hired Robin Ng and his photos were great.

But since I had my D40, I said "I want to shoot too!" and they had to let me shoot. Here are just some of the moments I captured.

My father was definitely up early in the morning to get ready. Hah! But I was there first to capture his early morning moment.

user posted image

Obviously, I haven't woke up fully since my flash also set wrongly. No wonder she didn't trust me taking the photos for the day.

Of course, time flies and soon everyone was up and it was time for my sister to get ready. My parents were really happy their lil girl was getting married.

user posted image

And my sister was definitely extremely happy.

user posted image

And my sister's friends? Well, they were happy for her. So they had some fun time before getting down to business in welcoming the groom.

user posted image

Finally, the groom arrived. It was not going to be easy entering my house. I had to quickly take this shot then rush over to open the door and receive my angpow biggrin.gif

user posted image

He realised soon enough that he wasn't going to be able to walk in just like that.

user posted image

First up! Drink sour drink!

user posted image

Then, came the bitter drink, before.... bun? "Ok what, just bun only..."

user posted image

It wasn't just any bun. It was a bun filled with sambal, chilli padi, chilli, wasabi and any spicy thing you can think of. The groom was sure glad that his "heng tais" were there to take care of him.

Soon, the challenges were over. And he could smile happy!

Mana tahu, went inside the house still need to face challenges. My sister say you better know how to sing our song! Luckily got lyrics.

user posted image

After sing song, need to pujuk to open the door.

user posted image

But it was finally happening. They were going to get married.

user posted image
user posted image

After putting on the rings, it was time for tea ceremony. My parents by now were grinning from ear to ear. Give away gold also so happy tongue.gif

user posted image

After receiving gifts, it was time to give away the ang pows which means small kids happy lah.

user posted image

And after that, it was all the group photos which I shall not bore you with smile.gif Hope you enjoyed this ''all over the place, truncated coverage'' of a wedding.

Eh? Not much diff compared to? Lol cant compare to D3 la. That wan ISO6400 is like ISO800 on a D300 tongue.gif But the D300 is quite a huge leap compared to CCD cameras lor..

Yep, got the 10.5mm as well. And I agree, there was too much sharpening on the wedding pics. tongue.gif

Tonight, I went to Sunway Pyramid with Sharon to try out the new Balinese (not that new lah) restaurant. We haven't tried it before and since I brought my gear out, it was good to try new food.

The interior is pretty good and the environment had a nice feel to it:

1. user posted image

The restaurant is quite big with an outside seating area and a corridor that leads from its tiny souvenir shop to the main restaurant area. Walking through here, you can catch a glimpse of the kitchen

2. user posted image

There are a few different areas to enjoy the food. Alfresco dining, or you can sit at the normal dining table or take a seat at one of their special areas, a bit like the Japanese restaurants.

3. user posted image

We ordered two dishes, the first being the Ole Ole Trio, which is a combination of chicken wings, squid rings, satay lipit and assortment of sambals.

4. user posted image

5. user posted image

We also ordered the Nasi Campur which consists of rice (duhhh), a fried keropok thingy, grilled squid, grilled fish, choice of chicken or beef rendang, assortment of sambals, satay lipit and fried kangkong.

6. user posted image

The food was good, but the price is something you expect to pay at a western restaurant such as Fridays or Chillis. But this place comes highly recommended by me. They serve pasta and western food but what the heck! Go for the Balinese!

I leave you with one final shot of our food for the night:

Visited my favourite zoo in this region, Singapore Zoo over the weekend.

Just sharing my shots here, start off with two first. A bit sleepy to edit the rest biggrin.gif

1. The pelicans were busy flapping their wings in the water and I thought it would be nice to capture the flurry of their flapping wings

2. The sleepy lion awakes!

lol thanks.

Its a long line of Nikon's 80-200mm evolution. But the most confusing era was the push-pull and two-touch. Basically, two touch had two rings, one to focus and one to zoom, and one button to change from AF to MF.

The push-pull had one ring to control all. So you push and pull macam shotgun lor. Haha.

I will be very dissapointed with Nikon if D300's pictures are unusable at ISO1000 tongue.gif

Last batch of photos:

8. Foie gras with dragon fruit! Yummy duck liver!

ISO: 1000

9. Garlic Fried Rice, it came in a large stone bowl (still sizzling hot!) before they served it in a smaller bowl

10. Finally, dessert of the day is tiramisu!

Overall, the meal cost me and my GF about RM300 but it was worth it. For those willing to pay a bit more, you can definitely check out Yuzu @ The Gardens, Mid Valley.
