I've never seen that before. Is that real?

It's official - 8TV is now a 24 hour channel.
It is done by simply replacing the test card, used since 2003/2004 with a simulcast of One FM + some information graphics instead on the time where the channel will usually show a test card (the time where no programmes was arranged).
A extremely cheap way to fill the previously unused downtime.
Meanwhile, one hour of transmission for TV3 (weekdays) and TV9 (daily) was given to Hot FM and Kool FM simulcast + Information graphics. It replaces the slots previously used by Wanita Hari Ini reruns on 1:30 am (TV3) and between 3:30 am and 4:30 am for TV9 (also airing repeats, mainly informative/lifestyle programming).

Need to preserve quality on news perhaps, hence the use of not GM mode?

I think this could be slightly offtopic, but its relevant to FTA broadcasters anyway, so do we have anyone that broadcasts 2020 olympics in FTA form (via live TV channels and dedicated feeds)?

If only either RTM or Media Prima could show "Pretty Little Liars" dubbed into English.

Also would like them to show the new Star Trek drama series and Killjoys.

Where is the Tokyo Olympics live broadcasts on TV1 and TV2?
From a business/commercial point of view, I think the reason why RTM made that decision, is because they wants to create public awareness on its secondary channels like TV Okey, Sukan RTM and RTM's online streaming platform, RTM Klik.
As the Olympic are shown on those channels, hence RTM can continue its regular programming on TV1 and TV2 just like the usual days, including prime time news and also the infamous home shopping slots. 

TV Okey is available on Astro, but only in SD quality
You want to watch it in HD? Then watch it over digital TV platform (myFreeview) or stream it on RTM Klik https://rtmklik.rtm.gov.my/tv/3
Indirectly, RTM is promoting and encouraging viewers to watch it on DTT or online streaming, hence RTM won't have to always rely on pay TV services like Astro and unifi TV all the time.

TV Okey? Sukan RTM? What is that?
For those who aren't aware that digital TV broadcasts (myFreeview) and/or RTM Klik actually exists, and right now you want to watch Olympics for free, then you will aware of the existence of RTM Klik as well as TV Okey and Sukan RTM channels  

But, I don't have TV antenna ready to receive digital TV broadcasts...
Then go get a TV antenna (or fishbone-like rooftop TV antenna) and a DVB-T2 digital TV box if needed, to enjoy digital TV broadcasts today   
That is where RTM/government can encourage/promote the public of its existence, especially those who don't have Astro/NJOI/fast Internet access at home.

Don't have good Internet access at your area to stream it on RTM Klik? Then you got to rely on fishbone antenna to receive digital TV broadcasts then, or else you can install Astro/NJOI.
Not within digital TV reception coverage area? Then use the satellite DTH version of MYTV Broadcasting.

Every Malaysians already knows what is TV1 and TV2...
If RTM continues to provide live sports coverage on TV1 and TV2, then only a minority of viewers would aware that RTM actually has secondary channels like TV Okey, Sukan RTM and also online streaming RTM Klik.

Since RTM now offers more number of channels than ever, which is more benefitting towards digital TV viewers, therefore there's no good reason for RTM to continue "squeeze" the Olympic live events on TV1 and TV2 just like the good old days anymore.

If you've subscribed to Sports pack, then you don't need to rely on RTM anymore. Just watch it on CH 785-794 in HD, and CH 781 in 4K UHD HDR.

If you are unifi TV or unifi playTV user, you can watch it from the 13 dedicated Olympic channels.
