Race-based events are racist if they sow hatred towards others - Khalid

A race-based gathering itself is not racist until it is used as a platform to create hate against other ethnicities, said Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad.

Taking to Twitter today, the Amanah party leader was responding to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had expressed frustration over allegations that the recent Malay Dignity Congress was a racist gathering.

"Gathering is not a problem, but it is the content. All races, and ethnicities, do gather to discuss problems faced by them and the country to find ways to address the problems.

"However, if it (the gathering) is used to sow hatred towards other races, only then it is being racist," he tweeted.

...

Mahathir, who is Bersatu president, had attended the congress which was held in Shah Alam on Oct 6.

Khalid was not among those present at the congress.

The gathering had been criticised by certain quarters for its speeches, which were alleged to be racist in nature and insensitive in a multiracial country.

Exactly! The MP of Shah Alam has described the Maruah Congress to a T.

Look, if the Malays want to have a congress to constructively discuss problems and solutions, by all means go ahead. A prosperous, forward looking Malay populations helps EVERYONE. A Malay population that succeeds of their own accord without needing to step on the backs and faces of other races or without playing the victimization card is most welcome and embraced.

But if all the Malays in the Maruah Congress can do is moan and point and blame the nons, and give solutions that demand submission from and domination over the nons, then the Malays can go *beep* themselves for all I care. I won't be fighting for the Malays to not be buruh asing or pembantu rumah murah in the next 10 to 15 years. I won't be fighting for this country on a national level. As it is, as far as I am concerned, Kelantan can go fvck itself any time, any day. If it sinks into the ocean tomorrow, I won't even bat an eyelash.

Dignity is earned. Respect is earned. Progress is worked for. Not given on a silver platter. These intangibles can never be tongkat-ed to you.

So true. You can work hard to make your race and religion great but don't spread hatred. Don't make your followers hate other race or religion.

Nons will always support n help if they need it. Instead, they went w blaming game, hate game, reminding game, threat game... thats when it goes down the drain.

Whats really hurtful is when nons starts to remind, blame n drumming war tones... thats when they will cry foul

For some reason, I think the interpretation of dignity is slightly different when try to say in BM and English. BM is more like taking good care of "dignity" or uphold dignity while English interpretation is like "earn your own dignity and prove it to others".

Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad has backtracked on his comments about the Malay Dignity Congress, now saying the community has a right to gather to discuss issues affecting them. – The Malaysian insight pic by Nazir Sufari, October 27, 2019.

THE Malay Dignity Congress is not racist and it is the right of the Malays to hold the gathering, said Federal Territories Minister Khalid Abdul Samad, backtracking on his earlier comments that such events could cause racial strife.

Taking to Twitter this morning, Khalid said: “I AGREE with Tun (Dr Mahathir Mohamad) that when a certain race has an assembly to discuss its issues and the country’s issues, it is NOT racist, but it is their right”.
