I have unifi 100 mbps which I signed up in Aug this year.
In this house, there's only me using it but occasionally wife uses it for streaming media.

Will 300 mbps be worth upgrading for an additional RM80?
I mostly use internet for online gaming.

Unfortunately, there isnt a capable competitor to Unifi in my area.

Stream is fine but sometimes netflix becomes pixelated.

I'm more interested in a better gaming experience.

Streaming/online gaming = 100mbps is actually enough. Unless you got big family la, then the extra bandwidth would be needed, or you really need that extra download speed for whatever reason. The main problem with unifi is unstable bandwidth, and bad latency.

I never hear Time customers complain about these issues.

Multiplayer gaming nowadays doesn’t require high bandwidth anymore. In fact jitter and latency is more important. You could game smoothly even with 5Mbps up/down connection as long as your latency is good.

Unfortunately I dont have access to Time.

I'm wondering up to which point would 100 mbps be acceptable, content is getting bigger and higher resolution by the year.

100mbps can watch full hd 1080p with no issues. I think 4K you might need a little higher. I have 500mbps unifi, the turbo crap. Can watch 4K on netflix, but like I said it's unstable, especially during the day. I'm using nvidia shield, which honestly I think is the best android tv box around. I used to get lags with my old box.

Online gaming experience, I still get 380ms ping on ESO. Unifi sucks for online gaming.

The answer is no! You upgrade but still need to buy higher range router to enjoy that extra speed.

I got TIME 500Mbps and using LAN direct to my PS4. Result still the same. In BF4, when face to face with enemy, gun can’t even fire

Netflix dont even use more than 30Mbps for 4k stream. If stream problem its your router.

Gaming you dont even need more than 10Mbps. Latency lag has nothing to do with bandwidth

Youre saying if I were to install something like the AC1200 Asus, my pixel streaming problems would be solved?

Frankly speaking, if just for online gaming, it's not worth it. It same. Afterall just 2 person use it.

If u alwayz download big files like online PS4/PC games, then worth it. If u hav big family who alwayz online, then it worth it.

Yeah, theoretically 30mbps is enough. But for unifi, no way. Their download speed (bytes) barely reaches 60% of the theoretical speed at times. E.g., mine is 500Mbps bandwidth, but achievable so far is 400Mbps on average. 400/8=50MB/s. Of course, I expect some loss of efficiency, but I don't expect my download speed to max out at 30MB/s. It seems like the same case with Streamyx back in the day - throttling.

Yes, latency is a big issue for unifi, as I've said.

Nope. Real world WiFi speed very rarely reach 300 anyways.

I got turbo’Ed to 800. Had to change to better router, rewire cat6 everything, throw away my power line plug etc etc (kiasu that time).. after a while hardly use to its max pun

not worth it unless you can get 1 of those RM139 300Mbps accounts. The only way is via transfer of ownership.

Last time in the broadband section there was 1 guy who was paying either RM159 or RM189 for 800Mbps + ultimate tv pack.. he wanted to switch to maxis and asked if anyone wants his unifi account

Now I am using TIME 500mbps.
House got 4 people. Playing online games and netflix everyday. I think the ideal speed is 300mbps for my house. Rarely optimize the speed. So for your case since only u and ur wife i think 100mbps is good enough.

In this forum ramai kipas susah mati TIME. They wont talk bad about TIME.

Was using Unifi. Then move to new house only got TIME. Playing ff on9 can kena kick out while raiding boss. Also in the morning can feel the line is so slow that i hv to use data. I work from home alot and need to do VC and the quality is bad. This happened in the morning between 9-11 weekdays. Call cs all they said line is good. Rubbish cs. When the line is down only they entertain u. But when the line is down they dont even know when will restore. Only say within 24-48hours.

Also last week down for 2 days they refuse to give rebate.

For me Unifi and TIME sama sahaja. Tp CS TIME is worst.

Last time use Unifi, the stock router is shitty. And my microwave interfere with the wifi signal. Ping very high. Change better router and it solved my problem. So agreed with u. Hv to troubleshoot ourself. I blame TM last time but it was my microwave and house structure interfere the wifi signal.

Using powerline and put wifi in my own room baru seronok main game and no more problem with Unifi.

Torrents hard to use as a measure because it depends on seeds/peers. I get about 30MB/s on torrents on Unifi 500Mbps (turbo), but no where close to the theoretical speeds.

Yea, not expecting 50MBps either, 40MBps would be reasonable.

Youtube still not entirely buffer free always, or load 1080p by default.

Come i bring legit information

Is your internet congested while gaming?

There is a difference between gaming ping under minimal load vs under full load.

You don't believe you can go test simple game with active ping counter and start saturating the internet connection by downloading something huge like torrent. The ping increases at 50% load then significantly at 70% or so. That's why fast.com speed test has a ping under load in advanced

If there is many ppl around then worth upgrading because even their streaming might eat into your speed

You can even try switching on qos and see whether it helps -it doesn't

Tldr more bandwidth less effects of increased ping under load

Depends if your last-mile connectivity is copper or fibre. If it's copper, then you shall remain as 100Mbps as the max it can go is 30Mbps. If it's fibre, sky is the limit.

Nevertheless, please get high-end router like Netgear R7800 to get optimum speed n ping.

Torrents hard to use as a measure because it depends on seeds/peers. I get about 30MB/s on torrents on Unifi 500Mbps (turbo), but no where close to the theoretical speeds.

May I know what's your hardware, like RAM, HDD or SSD, wifi or cable (what cable)? What about direct downloads?

100mbps can watch full hd 1080p with no issues. I think 4K you might need a little higher. I have 500mbps unifi, the turbo crap. Can watch 4K on netflix, but like I said it's unstable, especially during the day. I'm using nvidia shield, which honestly I think is the best android tv box around. I used to get lags with my old box.

Online gaming experience, I still get 380ms ping on ESO. Unifi sucks for online gaming.

Mine also 30MB/s torrent. Hardly reach 30 actually. Around 28.
TIME 500mbps. Weirdly my seed is high around 3000 but still cant go above there. Same results for wifi 1200ac or cat6. 16gb ram. Ssd.

Direct download pun around that figure. Why i think much lesser ah? Maybe the size not as big as torrent tak sempat nak laju sudah habis download. 😂

Got turbo'ed to 500mbps before this. Most of the time never reached that speed when tested using speed test (5ghz or connected using lan). Downgraded to 100mbps package in March cause it's way cheaperrr. Never noticed any different and at least the speed reached 100mbps+- most of the time. Btw four people using the net in my house and I usually use it to play some FIF okay je no lag at all unless the opponent's connection sucks

Will 300 mbps be worth upgrading for an additional RM80?
I mostly use internet for online gaming.

Unfortunately, there isnt a capable competitor to Unifi in my area.

run speed test to actually see how much the speed you are getting, like me previously, Im on 100mbps data but can only use 30mbps.

so I called TM and they gave me a new router free, after change router then only I can use speed up to 100mbps.

Netflix should be no issue.

Torrent I understand if it can't reach higher speeds because there are too many factors to consider.

On my 300mb connection for direct downloads, I can go up to 32/33MB/s on one PC with 8GB RAM/HDD, another 16GB RAM/SSD. And both on cable.

Just go to broadband section and find the thread about unifi and how to fix ping/not getting full speed.

Most likely is router + settings issue.

Try it before upgrade and regret.

8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM, DDR3 I think. SanDisk Ultra SSD, 15m Cat6 cable from Asus 1200+ Wifi Router. I'm using Ugreen Ethernet-USB adapter (Gigabit) because my laptop's ethernet can only handle 100mbps (fast ethernet). All-in-all, I get about 400mbps on average.

Direct download... I barely download large files using direct. On Steam, I'm able to get 20-25MB/s - but it really depends on server location.

I'm using my old laptop (lenovo bought in 2013) for now, with an E-GPU connected. Wanted to upgrade to proper gaming PC, 4k+ ready (just want a 1080p60fps build), but really thinking if want or not - Sunday only got time to game. See la end of the year.

sometimes my meksis mobile ping is way better than fiber lol

Streaming/online gaming = 100mbps is actually enough. Unless you got big family la, then the extra bandwidth would be needed, or you really need that extra download speed for whatever reason. The main problem with unifi is unstable bandwidth, and bad latency.

I never hear Time customers complain about these issues.

Is your router supplied by TM? Get better quality router that can manage bandwidth well. Even lower end ASUS non AC model does a way much better job than the TPlink supplied by TM.

100mbps is enough from my experience

I am using ASUS RT-AC58U, my smart tv all got build in wifi 2.4/5ghz, the router is on 2nd floor, tvs all at 10/12 meters from the router . I have no problem playing ultra 4k on them, no lag.
still on my habit : reset the router every morning.

I am using maxis fiber now btw.plug and play. btw ping sucks . what do u expect when using TM getaway?

from head ( TM ) latency already high then change router/package to 800mbps also no point lah boss
*
Would there be a point to buy a new router for less ping time then?

Also, good post about the 802.11ax, but is there any point to buying a router that provides 6Gbps if our ISPs for home use dont provide those speeds?

Nope. I m currently using 500 Mbps , was using 100 Mbps before , not much different in almost everything. Your bandwidth might be faster but no point if servers and hardware can't keep up with you.

tell you what

u find somebody who willing to borrow you a better router, then check the results

then u can make official complaint to tm

802.11ax still new, so relax, more routers/device that support wifi 6 coming soon. just like wifi 5 ( ac ). even today not every device support wifi 5 ( ac ) especially budget hp

and I am sure our fiber provider will increase the speed later on. otherwise no point having wifi 6 then

100mbps is enough from my experience

I am using ASUS RT-AC58U, my smart tv all got build in wifi 2.4/5ghz, the router is on 2nd floor, tvs all at 10/12 meters from the router . I have no problem playing netflix 4k on them, no lag.
still on my habit : reset the router every morning.

I can get a router, but I wonder how much I should spend before I get diminishing returns on ping and latency.
To put it another way, what's the best router I can get now that would improve ping and latency over the default UNIFI D Link router.

I could get the R7800 Netgear or any 802.11ax router, however my concern is if I'll be able to utilize it fully within the lifespan of the router.
TM just introduced bandwith in the hundreds last year after it was available globally many years before that, how long until they can catch up to match the capacities offered by routers today?

If you want to get mesh, I can recommend the TP Link Deco M3/M5. I have both models, and they're great.

Even with the default TM D-Link router, I can get 100 mbps download consistently with upload of 50 - 70 mbps.

Need help guys. Any idea why is the 100mbps plan named as Unifi Lite instead of Unifi?

I thought Unifi Lite is the new name for Streamyx but the unifi chat specialist confirmed that this is fiber broadband.

In this house, there's only me using it but occasionally wife uses it for streaming media.

Will 300 mbps be worth upgrading for an additional RM80?
I mostly use internet for online gaming.

Unfortunately, there isnt a capable competitor to Unifi in my area.
*
Seriously NO. I used TIME fiber , they upgraded mine from 100 to 500 Mbps ( paying same price but i got free router icon_rolleyes.gif ) . No big different. You only get higher speed while doing speed test, that's all LOL. Even when streaming it will depend on the server which provide you with the service , which usually won't make much different if your bandwidth higher than 100 Mbps. Even latency is the same 100 Mbps you'll still get below 10 latency. Better spend the money upgrading your hardware to minimize latency problem like cabling / port or router.

Depend on what you see the 4k or 2k quality. 4k60p online wont be so critical compare to those raw files 80gb++ blu-ray movie.

And how many device parallel play the 4k movie at the same time ?

if u have 12 people in house

not worth getting 300Mbps as well since same price
and 100Mbps is definitely not enough for 12 people, not including people who come to your house

For most home-users , 100Mbps download speed is more than enough, on condition 4k video-streaming is not used.

In general, streaming a recorded video at 720p/HD, eg at Youtube, requires a minimum 1Mbps dl speed and if streaming for 1 hour will consume about 1GB of data.
If do the same at 1080p/FHD = 2Mbps required, and consumes about 2GB of data. (FHD = Full HD)
If do the same at 4k or 2160p/UHD = 16Mbps, and consumes about 8GB of data.
....... If live-streaming, double the above speed and data figures, eg playing online games at 4k on Google Stadia = 32Mbps required and live-streaming sports at 720p/HD at drakuladottop = 2Mbps required.
https://www.tellusventure.com/blog/15-mbps-...l-for-4k-video/

Streaming videos and web-browsing use very little upload speed/bandwidth.

If using 4 Live-streaming security/CCTV cameras at 1080p, then they will require a total of 16Mbps (4 X 4Mbps) in download and upload speed. If ul speed not enough, use lower video resolution at 720p.
If using 2 Smart TVs = live-streaming at 1080p/FHD = require 8Mbps (2 X 4Mbps).

Web-browsing uses insignificant dl bandwidth of about 0.4Mbps per device.

So, 100Mbps download/10Mbps upload speed is more than enough for most home-users. 100Mbps dl speed can support 25 devices doing live-streaming at 1080p simultaneously(25 X 4Mbps = 100Mbps).

If there is any video lag/buffering, you should lower the video resolutions, eg during Unifi network congestion at peak hours from 7pm to 11pm and weekends because TM Unifi often oversells its bandwidth to subscribers, like how airlines often overbook seats on flights to maximize profits. IOW, youonly get the paid-for 100Mbps or 300Mbps during off-peak hours. During peak hours, you may get only 80% of the contracted dl speed.

For most home-users, 800Mbps or 1Gbps is crazy foolish fast and a complete waste.

that recent "promo" is basically a trap to customer like u that got the boost/turbo back then
a trap promo to downgrade your speed back while maintaining the price and free u a mere 2 months which is a total trap and then lock u for another 24 months contract

people who got the turbo don't fall for the trap
i applied for that promo because my unifi is just activated 2 days before they intro this promo

I’m using 300mbps. My take is that it’s not worth the upgrade. I was a 100mbps user then got the free upgrade. If you have a wireless network capable of utilizing such a high bandwidth and you download a lot of stuff from the internet then yes. Other than that it’s a waste. Unless your house have 5 users like mine streaming and downloading at one instances.
