Work in IT. Started off in Malaysia. Now with EU PR hoping to get German PR soon.
Moved in 2013 to Prague, Czech Republic
Moved in 2019 to Bavaria, Germany (lubang through ownself apply jobs, easily sent out 800++ applications)

My personal experience, salary discrimination is a real issue here especially for Asians. But no complaints, been real happy with our move to Germany, hopefully will be our last one for a long while.

Is proficientcy in German essential?

Difficult to answer; in short - it depends. Yes, it's important and "vital" (also for daily living); but it's not the ONLY factor of candidate choice as I have heard stories of my asian colleague being discriminated even with German language proficiency. So, it's not a guarantee, but best to have it especially if you don't have any other "advantages" to stand out among other candidates. For example my case, in the end; I had less than 5 2nd round interviews, but my disadvantages are (1) I wanted market salary and (2) I don't speak German. My main advantages are my CV, but also the fact that I was already in "Europe".

It really depends on the company (and the culture) that you're applying to. Best to stick to MNCs, but even then; the salary divide is real. I can name a couple of MNC companies that were only willing to pay what my previous salary was; which is absurd since I would have to move across Europe (and I could have just moved to Germany with my previous company if i wanted a 20% increase in $$$).
