It existed before asp.net and java, and didn't get replaced by these 2 behemoths, why should it be replaced by nodeJS?

New versions have language features that makes it cleaner to use.

I use it for backend API creation only and not for server side rendered pages, since I do all that in the front end up with either vue.js or similar frameworks.

In Malaysia, PHP still no 1. Like example, Wordpress. How many SMEs using Wordpress here. Also, PHP suitable for a beginner because it's easy. To replace PHP with Python or Node.JS in the nearest time? I don't think so.

ASP.NET came later.

JAVA didn't have anything against PHP that time in 1995, it's merely for desktop.

JAVA's JSP (part of j2EE) came later in 1999 even though the language itself already around same time as PHP. It wasn't really targeted at the web compared to PHP.

It'll very much depend on the team that's working on the project. I've not touched PHP in ages, and all the time that I've been doing mobile work, I've already switched to Ruby on Rails for the backend API service. Now also moving away from Ruby on Rails, unless its for a smaller project, or if I'm rushing for time.

So what stack are you using now for web dev? Thinking of touching Rails as well.

It depends on what the scope is.

If its public facing with large number of users, then React as the SPA, and Go as the backend.

Internal admin screens tends to still largely be in Rails
