Sup guys , I’ll be heading out to college next year and I have me eyes set on 2 used MBP but of different years. The first one is a 2017 MBP 3.1ghz , 1tb . While the other one is a 2018 2.6ghz and 512gb . I’ll be taking mathematics , economics and psychology , accounting for my alevels . Which laptop should I grab ? Might I add that the 2018 is almost like a 1.5k more expensive and both are used . I was initiallly hovering more on the 2017 side however after reading some post on how powerful the 2018 is Idk now . I’ll be using it for college work and watching videos . I also download quite a lot of movies and tv shows .

I assume these are your models

MBP 2017 13" or MBP 2017 15"

MBP 2018

Based on the specs, yes the 2018 version is using recent tech compared to the 2017. I dont think that tech is worth RM1.5k though, especially for your use case. Just use the 2017 version or any other non Mac laptop for that matter, if youre not using it for any Mac specific software.

If you want safer route take the 2015 MacBook Pro. Still more than enough power to last you through Uni days and even work.

I think a maxed out MBA would be suffice in your case.
Back then in 2013, I bought a maxed out MBA when I did my electrical & electronic engineering degree.
basically abused it for 6 years (4 years degree + 2 years master), heavy MATLAB simulations, AutoCAD, PCB EDA, Solidworks, running VMs.
it's been 6 years and it's still working like day 1, only had to replace the battery (I also clean the internals and reapply thermal paste every few months).

Since you are taking the arts route, the 2017 MBP is more than enough to get you through university.

I have a MBP 2010 that survived through till 2017 and now Im using a MBA 2017.. Very long lasting
