CNN reported that Sony has OFFICIALLY confirm that the 60GB PS3 is now MRSP at $499 and a new model the 80GB will be sold at $599 wink.gif

After several rounds of rumors and denials, Sony has officially announced via press release that the 60Gb model of its Blu-ray enabled PlayStation 3 will be reduced to $499 as of July 15.

In addition to the $100 price cut, the company also says it will introduce a new 80Gb edition of the console retailing for $599, which will come bundled with the flagship PS3 racing title 'MotorStorm.'

"As we move into the next phase of PS3, it's important that we continue to evaluate our product line, offering consumers the technology and features that meet their growing needs for new forms of media and the way in which it is delivered," said Jack Tretton, president and CEO of SCEA.

"The introduction of the 80GB PS3, the new pricing for the current 60GB model, the availability of more than 100 new software titles this fiscal year and, finally, the expansion of services for PlayStation Network, will provide even more options for users and will help bring new consumers into the PS3 fold," he added.

Today's announcement comes at a crucial time for the PS3. While more than 3.6 million units have been sold worldwide since launch, PS3 sales have lagged behind Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360, which are both more competitively priced. Sony is clearly counting on this price cut to help level the playing field for the PS3 among its game console brethren.

But the move could have even greater ramifications for the high-def format war. Already responsible for catapulting Blu-ray software sales to a reported two-to-one lead over HD DVD since the beginning of 2007, the lower price tag for the PS3 can only help the Blu-ray format as it introduces yet more uninitiated consumers to the wonders of high-def disc.

Although it's still a good two hundred dollars more than the least expensive stand-alone HD DVD players, with its new competitive pricing, the 60Gb PS3 now shares honors with Sony's second-generation BDP-S300 Blu-ray player as the least expensive Blu-ray player on the market.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Earlier this week, Sony dropped the price on its PlayStation 3 60GB model from $599 to $499. Analysts responded favorably to the announcement, saying it would put pressure on Microsoft to drop the price of its Xbox 360 system, the priciest configuration of which currently costs $479. But while analysts might think the cut is enough to make the PS3 cost-competitive, one of Sony's biggest publishing partners appears underwhelmed.

Speaking with Reuters, Konami North American and European operations head Kazumi Kitaue expressed doubt. "I wonder if Sony can win back user support by the price cut of just $100," Kitaue said, adding, "I don't expect a substantial impact...With $500, you can buy a personal computer."

Kitaue no doubt would like a cheaper PS3 in order to spike sales of the machine and have a larger installed user base in place for Konami's highly anticipated PS3 exclusive Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. However, the executive said Konami might have to bring the series to non-Sony systems in order to make its development money back.

"Since Metal Gear Solid was born for the PlayStation, we would like to keep it a PlayStation game," Kitaue said. "But we might have to take some steps."

Can Sony pull another miracle to stop that!!!

US Bestbuy, Circuit City, Amazon, Buy..... are currently selling PS3 60GB for US499. Any price reduce in Malaysia? US Model is using 110V and it will be more trouble to buy back and use it with step up transformer. So, was thinking if there is any price reduction in Malaysia then will be great!!!

What is the latest Price for PS3 60GB?

Thanks

Is it, i read the spec it mention using 110V but not sure about the adapter!!

If buy it here and carry back then worry will be kena tax by Custom then will not be worth it d!!

US499 will be ~RM17xx, so is it worth to get it here as the warranty will be the main problem!!

Thanks

aiyo the prices are $499 and $599 at launch. after price reduction oso $499 and $599. How can lidat? They should introduce a core PS3 priced at $399 lah. Difficult to fight Xbox'x core with the $499 and $599. MS also never bother about PS3 in the press con. The mostly attack Wii with their so called family oriented titles and the Disney hidef contents. Hell they even had their press con at a high school. Every was designed to attack Wii and not Sony.

no need to be so gung ho about the price drop. How much is the PS3 in Malaysia now, RM1500? That is roughly USD420. Even if the drop the PS3 price to USD499, we are still paying way lower. And with region free games and same region Blu-Ray movies, i dont see why you would want to spend more on the American unit.

HARGA PS3 YANG ANDA BAYAR SEBENARNYA MURAH! HARGA DI US = USD$ 599, HARGA DI MALAYSIA = USD$ 420. SUBSIDI KERAJAAN = USD$ 179.
