tan chong has been bringing in many exciting niche cars over the past few years

megane
clio
captur
koleos
xv
forester
levorg
leaf

my question is, why they dont want to update their ageing nissan lineup with MAINSTREAM new sedans and crossovers ? is it because government dont want them to compete with umw and drb hicom ?

Tan Chong Nissan and Tan Chong Subaru is different family. Tan Chong Motors (Nissan) is malaysian. Tan Chong International (Subaru and others) is singaporean.

Two different families, now don't talk to each other.

Renault is under msia one - Tan Chong Motors group.

Not sure about Grab.

Basically, even though the name is Tan Chong, it's two different companies with two different ways of working the market. Whatever TCIL/MI is doing, they're improving the amount of Subarus in Malaysia at least. XV and Foresters are getting more and more common nowadays.

TCM bringing in Qashqai is a no brainer really. Honda and Toyota already market their compact SUVs in the country already. One is affordable at 120k and the other is stupidly expensive at 160k. Qashqai just needs to look around to see that if they bring it in around 120k (so that Xtrail lowest variant doesnt compete with it) then they can still make it popular. Nissan malaysia doesnt have the name and cult status of honda and toyota but they haven't been trying to win more of the market compared to the other 2 I feel.

forget about qashqai that window of opportunity is already closed. xv50 and xv70 will sweep the 80k -120k suv market.

X50 X70 will win the market for pure value but not everyone wants Proton/Geely cars. HRV is still popular too.
More option is always good.

Look at Subaru last time. Forester and XV price was crazy high during introduction ~160k. Few more years down the road XV price is around 110~120k now and starting to get more common, Forester ~140k-160k from like 200k.

Competition is good. That's how Honda msia and Toyota msia keep fighting with each other to bring it better cars each generation. If nobody fight with Proton/Perodua, we're going to end up with worse local cars compared to imported cars.

Literally nobody gives a sh*t about all these cars above. People are smart enough to avoid them.

They usually have the "don't fix it ain't broke" mindset i think. Just look at Almera and Grand Livina, which is very old model but people still buying it. In City maybe not many but when out of city there's tons of them especially small towns and kampungs.

Now they not shy to hike price up already. Some more the hike is not small....

They just need to advertise the so called additional "premium" touches compared to previous, then price hike. Don't believe, wait for the new price of civic facelift and new corolla.

Mazda some what "spoiled" the market for their up market push, everyone now wants to join the bandwagon, left with local and korean players playing the value segment.

New corolla pricing now 138k top variant.. only 2 variants to choose from.

I guess it's impossible for SUVs to compete with x70 but sedan and hatchback cars still got room.

Mazda strategy may or may not work. Others like Toyota came out with their own luxury marque (Lexus) so that they can still cater to the common buyers. Even honda (Acura) and Nissan (Infiniti) has one.

Subaru still small fish outside of the US. It's extremely popular in the US.
