Looking to get external HDD because 2 of my internal HDD is gone case, and decided to switch to external HDD from now on. I'm looking to get a reliable one, just 1TB will do, to store my working files / drone videos etc.

Looking to get seagate HDD because they are known for reliable HDD, but just wanna ask for opinion here first, so would like sifu to recommend me reliable brand and the model of that brand for me to go look for. Tq !

Try to not buy the Hard disk. SSD externals are cheap to buy these days. If you have USB 3.1, then you can even go for NVME External SSD.

Oh I don't really know about all these, I always thought I should only be getting external hdd, so I should go for external ssd instead ? I don't have USB 3.1 though, only USB 3.0.

hdd nowadays lifespan are like 2-3 years, afterday just get new one and migrate.
mechanical stuff tends to wear off after prolonged use, it's common knowledge.

and to store important files, make second copies somewhere else, cloud or nas.
storing them on single hdd is like asking for trouble.

and SSD will wear off one days too, when user write/erase too much.

On the expensive side and very portable, samsung t5 or the even faster lexar sl100 pro.
Mainstream cost effective, crucial mx500 + any external 2.5in casing (maybe ugreen, unitek or orico). Get usb 3.1 gen2 if the top up isnt too much.

Yes, if you cant get that the WD slim is also decent.

I've got both and theyre the same quality so going with either is ok.

With your budget, you could get the 1TB. If you top-up RM70, the 2TB would be affordable.

I see, yup I plan to get just 1TB anyway. I've read some stuff regarding external hdd spoils quite easily, with the main factor being it drops on the floor, etc. But if taken well care of, it'll last at least for years to come ?

How sure are you that you won't drop the HDD at all? Even small bumps could destroy the external HDD rendering that HDD useless

SSDs are 100% safe from drops or bumps
Save more money & get a 1TB SSD and buy a simple RM30 ~ RM40 case to use it with

Hmm I can't be 100% sure that I won't drop it or cause even the slightest bump, do they have casing for external hdd as well ?

You can buy HDD case for around RM14 - https://shopee.com.my/2.5-Inch-USB-2.0-3.0-...3105.2685628874 . As others have recommended, go for a SSD, most people are phasing out small capacity mechanical drives. I'm running a SSD bought around 5 years ago in a laptop I use evry day , last time I checked, there wasn't any wear reported.

I usually leave mine at home connected to the PC, TV or in my drawer/table. I have one in my bag in case I need to do some file transfers while I traveling. For me, if it's not in use then it's stowed away. That means that there is a very low chance of this being dropped. If this describes your use case too, then I'd save myself the hassle and just get the HDD. I dont think you'd drop this as often as you'd drop your phone

That's exactly what I'd be doing, I'm only taking it out to use if I have files I need to transfer to my computer or use it directly on the HDD itself, other than that I'll be storing it in my drawer. How long have you been using ur HDD ?

How long your internal HDD last? External HDD usually last even lesser than internal HDD. Especially more when you gonna use it as extensively as when you use internal HDD.

If your data is valuable then make sure to have backup of it.

I've got a Toshiba canvio that's been around for 7 years, WD for 3 years and that Seagate you linked to for 6 months.

I am all for Samsung drives for example, I do have a lot of their products and do like them a lot and I do prefer that one over anything else including even Seagate and Western Digital for example. Do you see my point ? I hope you really really do.

2.5" HDD ? Almost all are rubbish product no matter internal or external.

3.5" HDD for 1TB you can simply choose. Important data you need backup in at least 2 different HDD.

Reliability and Seagate don't go hand in hand. I would recommend WD over the earlier based on personal experience running NAS.
