I see alot of people complain working as mechanic very hard on your body, low pay and long hours? Is this career choice even worth going for anymore?

My brother in law work as a mechanic. Not really hard on body, but dirty and long hour yes.

Usually people gain experience and open their own workshop, not much people will work forever as mechanic I think..... sweat.gif

Work to become specialist yes. Worth it. Example, say u become a specialist for certain problematic brand like Peugeot, every owner will beg u for help. Of course, your fees need to be reasonable first.

Yes, especially if you specialize. I know Leo Sachetto from GERMAN TECH MOTORWORKS takes in apprentices and trains them well for all kinds of Porsches. I'd do it if I had a chance to start over again.

It has big future, provided one is constantly upgrading with newer knowledge, knowing how computerized diagnosis, as nowadays a lot of car functionality is operated/controlled with on board "computer".

Plug in the tablet or link to laptop, it will reveal what's has gone wrong with the car, instead of old fashioned type of "dismantle and see" or "guessing game" based on experience or just merely dismantling bolt and nut.

Instead being called as "mechanic", nowadays being upgraded as "specialist".

By long hours do you mean over 12 hours per day?

Nope, he worked 10 hours per day from Monday till Saturday, then Sunday and public holidays are on call.

He work at logging company so he'll not only be repairing those normal cars but including heavy equipment like lorries, excavator, backhoes and so on.

Ever heard of TopGear? My friend's dad founded the mechanic shop.

He started as a low mechanic guy and currently risen to a business man with countless mechanic shop/gym/other shops. So, yes u can be rich.

Yeah, I agreed with @Si kutu rayau, normally car workshops are open from 9am to 7pm, Mon-Sat. Sometimes they open on not-so-important public holiday also.

actually I liked cars a lot, and tbh I once used to think to study automobile mechanic when I was picking my major. but my parent see this as a tough path and been persuading me to study other things.

I took business then accounting and finance. I still have very much interest in car and took care of my car myself. a lot of the maintenance and repair I lookup on youtube, and those that can be repair/replace myself, I will do it myself too.

because of this thread, I wonder if I did the right choice 7years ago... but I think working on own cars and working on other cars is a different thing? and yes, I do feel mechanic is definitely more competitive and tough than my current career. and its not about getting a tool and you can fix it yourself, nowdays require more knowledge and expensive electronic equipments to do so...

this has kinda opened my memory and the decision I made 7years ago... I wonder if it is right..
