It means the father mother cant make up their mind to choose a name. So the kid have 2 names.

My grandma have that nickname in IC. She told me when she was a baby, the given name gave alot of problems and she often gets sick. After change name / put the alias no more getting sick.. dunno some old beliefs la..

using first name the kid got always sick, then parents add @ alternate name then they get better, so both name stick

a friend of mine dislike his given name & plan to change his name, jpn officer suggested he just use the @ because it is easier, so he go with the officer advice

it should have many meaning

1 of which is that they changed named before during their childhood

like my late dad his ic got 2 names xxx @ xxx.. the story was when he was baby.. he always sick so his parent gave him another name.. fyi he was born in 1930s..

meaning he needed new suitable name, yeah i heard some stories like this its true as far as i know

I cannot imagine how does one fill in the form for immigration purpose where they have surname and first name and middle name columns. People here with 2-3 first names here already not sure, plus need to know where to put bin/binti/al/ap somemore. Must be more pening for people with 2 aliases
