Some variety - hot meal, sandwiches, croissants, coffee, ice cream - always a plus points.
People go to convenience store is not to buy pampers, shampoo, peanut butter or chips.
They want something to chew and filling.

Those that stick with general items, chocolates and some tasteless bread bun packed in 8 will have a hard time to survive.
Most convenience store is damn expensive selling a small peanut butter (good brand) at a price higher than the big peanut butter in teso or aeon big.

People dont go to convenience store to pay a choking throat price when you could have done your daily grocery from local supermarket.
The convenience store is for you to grab something eat at a instance, not a place to buy shampoo.

7e - same merchant pay them for selling their products there.

That's how they survived. And both places the products price is much higher. Only difference is 7e income is stagnant because not many people buy their stuff whereas family mart will untung more because many people buy stuffs from them.

Actually this is a good case study on Malaysian buisness

Before family mart came around, the malaysian store concept is all like the west. Basically simple hot food (hot dogs), with mostly junk food around the store.

It works if you are in the west where folks have a more home "party" culture as eating out is crazy expensive

In Asia however all these while the successful stores are the Japanese concept, more food orientated where they have a huge section.

For some reason no one bring this concept down to kl, probably because the existing stores (ie 7e) are earning their dues and dont care about it.

Now Family Mart brings its concept and its a hit, cause frankly i dont see why it wont be, they place their stores in strategic locations that you never see 7e to be (malls) and because they have food to cover their overheads its much easier to do so.

Now you see folks like News.com doing the same

Other than fresh foods, familymart has imported grocer selection, thats the main difference from boring marts selling local stuff.

since our experience of convenience store is 7e, the benchmark is already quite low to please us

how is 7e considered as convenience store when u cant even pay with debit/credit card.. i mean it's already 2019

Familymart is doing well, because they keep on improving themselves and also 7E is not competing up the par with Familymart

I would go as far as to say accepting card is the minimum expectation already especially in KL where cashless penetration is very high. Unfortunately malaysian consumers in general are not very forward thinking that they will flock to the establishment that is more innovative and they just accept and continue to buy from 7e, that's why they can get away with what they are doing now. In other markets where is ultra competitive, they sure bungkus long ago d
