It's a business, you have to start from bottom, find a niche and be really good in it. Build a portfolio, market yourself and build up customer base.
I know someone who started part time getting less than RM1000 per month initially. But he market himself really well, build up his translators network, plus he has excellent technical background: work as engineer for few years, then did MSc in chemical engineering. So, he got plenty of technical translation jobs even including those from medical industry. His work ethics are excellent and always finish jobs ahead of time. Currently he's making more than RM15k per month working from home and his client list include some of the biggest companies in the world. Can afford RM250k as house downpayment and RM75k as car downpayment last year.
In any field, you can be successful if you work smart and work hard. I also know lousy translators making only RM1000-2000 per month, but they are happy as it's only part time job that allows them to be full time house wives.
