Hi, can anyone advised me what are the steps to be a certified translator?
Other than ITBM, any other options?
First of is BM-BI.
Then maybe other languages if i have the time to take classes for them.
Im looking into this as a full job option, or freelancer.
Where do you find prospective clients as freelancer?

ITBM's intensive course on translating is good. I have attended it.

You will need to go to class from 8-5pm then you will have to do assignments and sit for exams. They will even provide you with certificates and your marks for each segments.

After completing the translating course, I think editing course would also be very good for someone who wants to become translator.

Other than ITBM, I dunno.

Go to university areas as many students need editing/proofreading/translating services for they FYP.

Are you working as translator or related to it?
With this certificate, can take any jobs issit?

I'm an interpreter. Not that you can take any job, but it will make you a more credible translator.

A certified translator has a stamp which is required when doing a translation for official documents like legal documents, police reports etc. I'm not sure how to acquire it.

If you don't mind, you can try translating subtitles as a freelancer as a kickstart.

I see, yeah i dont mind. Where can you find such openings for subtitles translating?
So far my friend pointed me to advertising in FB, but I havent received any feedback.
Googled so far showing full time only.

For translation: depends on the difficulty of the text and most translators that I know go by the number of words or pages. Also sometimes by how fast do you need them? If ASAP then the charges could double up.

Interpreter: Based on the event and the company's budget.

No such thing as standard pay la...

It's a business, you have to start from bottom, find a niche and be really good in it. Build a portfolio, market yourself and build up customer base.

I know someone who started part time getting less than RM1000 per month initially. But he market himself really well, build up his translators network, plus he has excellent technical background: work as engineer for few years, then did MSc in chemical engineering. So, he got plenty of technical translation jobs even including those from medical industry. His work ethics are excellent and always finish jobs ahead of time. Currently he's making more than RM15k per month working from home and his client list include some of the biggest companies in the world. Can afford RM250k as house downpayment and RM75k as car downpayment last year.

In any field, you can be successful if you work smart and work hard. I also know lousy translators making only RM1000-2000 per month, but they are happy as it's only part time job that allows them to be full time house wives.
