SONGKHLA, Aug 14 (Bernama) — The Malaysian driver involved in the road accident killing five grass cutters in Songkhla, Southern Thailand was found to have been driving without a valid licence.

The 30-year-old woman has been charged with reckless driving resulting in deaths and damage to public property.

The driver faces a 10-year jail term and a fine of not more than 20,000 baht (RM2,721), if found guilty.

Thai police agreed to reduce bail from 500,000 baht (RM 68,000) to 200,000 (RM27,000).

However, the woman was prohibited from leaving the country until the conclusion of the case.

Besides that, the woman need to pay cash compensation of 50,000 baht (RM 6,764) each to the families of the victims amounting to 250,000 baht (RM33,823).

The driver have yet to give any feedback on the compensation payments and bail.

She was also fined 200 baht (RM28) for driving without a valid licence.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Jojie Samuel the embassy would monitor the case closely.

“The embassy will provide the appropriate consulate assistance needed,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, family members of the victims, the driver and consulate representatives had a meeting regarding the compensation money at the Rattaphum Police Station in Songkhla today.

Yesterday, the woman and two of her friends were on the way from Krabi to Hatyai, Songkhla before the car they were travelling in ploughed into six grass cutters who were resting on the roadside of Jalan Asia, Rattaphum District, Songkhla.

In the 2.40 pm (local time) incident, five grass cutters died while another sustained severe injuries. The driver and her friends sustained light injuries.

Initial investigation found that the driver lost control of the vehicle and skidded to the side of the road before ramming into the victims.

Meanwhile, police said the vehicle involved in the incident only had a valid road tax but wasn't covered by insurance.

I sense bullshit story from the driver mentioned on her hitting obstacles on the road.

She’s bluffing and created things that werent there in the first place.

Put her in Thai jail for 20yrs for reckless driving that caused 5 lives that already burdened with their low income

Both must renew at same time. What is the meaning of someone else insurance when police mention this:

QUOTE(Sai Lin Nia @ Aug 15 2019, 01:59 AM)

How do you get road tax without valid insurance ?
*
Our car insurance covers Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei only. Thailand have to purchase a insurance separately before entering the border. Usually you can find agents selling at food courts or shops along the road to border control points.

meaning its not her car. and since the owner aka insured driver not the one who crashed the car, insurance doesnt cover the crash. at least thats how i viewed it

For info aside from your own:

1. Endorsement 101 from your MY vehicle insurance
2. Your own Travel Insurance coverage

The insurance that available for purchase at those border seller, is only to cover the 3rd party Thai people bodily injury in case of an accident happen and involving Thai citizen the coverage up to 50,000 THB or around 4 to 5k MYR

Their properties (if any) is not covered by the insurance sold on the border (before entering Thailand).

You need to purchase the Por lor Bor (compulsory insurance for vehicle in the Land of Smile)

For motorcar (car/sedan/minivan/4wd) the validity is 2 weeks minimum and for motorcycle minimum should be 3 month.

The one that they sell on border for 2 weeks or even daily rate, the validity is questionable if you purchase it for your motorbike.

Then you (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) to purchase the 3rd Party voluntary insurance from the Thai insurance agent or company they called it 3+ voluntary vehicle insurance.

This 3rd party voluntary insurance to cover the damage caused for the Thai Citizen properties (Car/Motorcycle/Lembu and so forth), bailed you out of jail (bail bond) and death compensation up to 1 Million Bhat per soul of Thai people that involved in the accident regardless on who is at fault. and you can only purchased in minimum 3 Months or one year validity.

Example

They will give you a print out that need to stick into your windshields and clearly mention the car registration number validity of the insurance (one year) and the issuing agent. (Some Thai police roadblock will ask for this especially in northern Thailand after BKK)

Expensive just for insurance in Thai? better pay than sorry.. if can not afford, then you cant afford to drive in for a holiday in Siam..

so in summary, for FULL coverage, on top of what you purchase before cross border, you need:
1. Por Lor Bor; and
2. 3+
am i right?

do you purchase the above 2 together before cross border, or you purchase in thai as soon as you crossed?

In a Nutshell, you will need the following insurances for proper coverage whilst riding / driving in Thailand.

1. The Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI / Por Ror Bor)

2. Thai Class Three Voluntary Insurance

3. Endorsement 101 extension (Malaysian Vehicle)

4. Personal Travel Insurance

3 & 4 is understandable, as it deals with our Msian side

what i mean is what is needed to deal with/fully comply with the Thai side.

Surely seating at the road side or cutting the grass with no safety cone/diversion is a contributing factor to the accident on a highway?

Let us be matured not to view the action of the driver in isolation. Asian attitudes to road safety by the authorities/municipal councils are way behind developed countries.

Kawan, our Msia driving license is valid for use in Thailand. This is part of ASEAN agreement between governments. Just like how our Msian driving license is also valid in other Commonwealth countries.

however, government to government is one thing, the pulis down at the local region akar umbi is another thing.

just like msia, thai oso have little napoleons who exercise their own authority macam dia punya. so it is just an extra effort to get an IDP or at least a certified translation of our lesen, for the convenience of the local authorities should the need arise, and to minimise chances of these little napoleons trying to extort you up. Not a must, but good to have.
