Also in my sharing panel i can choose to invite people into my family group. If it's only for family then I would think it would default to being in the family group?

To OP, why are you buying directly from Microsoft website? That's MSRP pricing. You could save your money and buy the Home subscription from other sellers and they are as original and safe as buying directly from their website, given you bought from legit sellers.

Pay less = more money to subscribe longer

It’s the same with Spotify where all members must be in the same household but obviously everyone is not really doing that.
