The first outlet, The Store Supermarket & Departmental Store was opened at Bukit Mertajam, Penang in year 1968.


As of year 1994, The Store Group has been listed on Bursa Malaysia.

How it all started...
JAYA JUSCO is set up in Malaysia In 1984, Jaya Jusco Stores Sdn. Bhd. was established in Malaysia, in response to the Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir's request to help modernise thee retail industry in Malaysia using the world's most advanced management expertise.
Dr. Mahathir believed that the modernisation of the retail industry was crucial for the country's economic growth. Prior to this, in 1983 Dr. Mahathir visited Tokyo and met the then JUSCO Co., Ltd. President, Mr. Takuya Okada to discuss the proposition of bringing the JUSCO name to Malaysia. The talks ended on a positive note and Dr. Mahathir invited JUSCO to set up store in Malaysia. All this was part of Dr. Mahathir's Look East policy for Malaysia.

Following this, a joint venture company was established in September 1984. There were 3 parties involved:

JUSCO Co., Ltd., Japan,

Peremba, a leading government owned property company and

Cold Storage, a premier supermarket chain store.

JAYA JUSCO's aim was to grow with the people of Malaysia through the transfer of expertise from Japan to Malaysia and human resource development, two factors which would contribute greatly to the progress of Malaysia.

Sime Darby Berhad to Divest Tesco Malaysia stake for RM300 million

Sime Darby Berhad (SDB) today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiaries Sime Darby Allied Products Berhad and Sime Darby Holdings Berhad have entered into conditional agreements with C.P. Retail Development Company Limited, Tesco Holdings B.V. and Tesco PLC to divest its 30 per cent stake in Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd for RM300 million.

The disposal is part of a larger deal between Tesco PLC and Thailand’s C.P. Group (CP) signed in March 2020, to sell Tesco PLC’s businesses in Thailand and Malaysia to CP for an enterprise value of US$10.6 billion.
SDB expects an estimated net gain on disposal of RM270 million from the sale of its stake in Tesco Malaysia, a joint venture it has held since 2001.

“We have come a long way with our joint-venture with Tesco. We opened our first store in Puchong in 2002. We have grown the business over the years and now have 69 stores nationwide.”

“This deal provides SDB with an opportunity to exit the non-core hypermarket business at a reasonable valuation. This transaction is part of our ongoing efforts to rationalise our non-core assets,” said SDB Group Chief Executive Officer Dato’ Jeffri Salim Davidson.

This transaction is conditional upon the approval of the Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, the sale of Tesco BV’s shares in Tesco Malaysia and the sale of Tesco’s Thai business to CP. The proposed disposal is expected to complete in 2H 2020.

Jeffri said the management is still waiting for the right time to divest its shareholding in the hypermarket chain.


KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 30): Sime Darby Bhd is not having a fire sale of its non-core assets, including its 30% stake in


Tesco Stores (M) Sdn Bhd,




despite the group's long-term strategy to focus on its three core businesses, namely


industries, motor, and healthcare.

At a media briefing on the group's financial performance for the fourth quarter ended Jun 30, 2018 (4QFY18), group chief executive officer Jeffri Salim Davidson said the management is still waiting for the right time to divest its shareholding in the hypermarket chain.

"30% stake in hypermarket is clearly not our core business. Are we desperate to sell it tomorrow?


The answer is no, but if someone came up and offer us a ridiculous amount of money, we will take it, so we are not [in a] hurry, and we want to wait for the right time, similarly for most of our non-core assets," he said.



"The strategy in Sime Darby is to firstly focus on industries and motor divisions. Secondly, we want to develop a third core business, which is the healthcare sector.

We have six hospitals now and we want to expand.

The third thing is divestment of all non-core businesses over time, we will not do fire sale," he added.
