Then the aircraft turn southwest off Chilean coast towards Antarctica. In the middle of the flight, ice-sheet from Antarctica (Antarctica itself would be a few hundred kilometres further south). Latitude on this occasion was 70°0′S (70 degree parallel south)

The 747 has no route restrictions, so can take the shortest route, ie over Antarctica....but a twin engine restricted by CASA etops rules, will have to take slightly longer route along the south Pacific.....

QF will stop the aging 747s and use their new 787-9 from mid next year....

Which is why I had to book this one despite not being the cheapest choice for SYD-SCL.

Note : LATAM and Qantas codeshare on a number of flights between SCL and SYD.

SCL-SYD route is doing very well. Leveraging on LATAM feeder network across south America, to Australia and New Zealand. It is growing to be common route for them to travel to Asia.

Beginning June 2020, Qantas will fly 787-9 on Santiago - Sydney route. By then there won’t be B747 for this route.

As such, flying above the edge of Antarctica will become history as twin-engined plane such as B787 won’t be allowed to venture very south unlike a four-engined B747.
