I was just wondering, what guitar+pickups should i get the get close to Slash's tone? The whole thing should be under RM2500.

And yeah, don't include the amp because i'm already getting one. I'm going to be getting a Randall RG50TC, so i guess the amp part is settled. I know it might not be the best amp to get Slash's tone, but i need it for my band because we play Metallica and all. Thanks in advance guys.

Haha, what's the difference between the Epi LP Standard and Custom? Besides, i heard that that because the Standard has a mahogany/alder body, it won't give you the Gibson-ish tone. Is it true?

Btw, if i do get the Standard LP, would i need to do any mods or will the pickup swap be enough? Thanks for any input.

PS; Heard a lot about Agile guitars too. But i don't really know much about them.

Oh yeah, most important thing. Does the Epi LP Standard have a 60s or 50s neck?

*prays its a 60s*

I came across this axe man, and it has pretty good features for the price. What do you think? Although it has Alnico V instead of Alnico II pickups. But i guess the tax and shipping cost would make it more expensive then the Epi LP Standard + Alnico 2 pickups which i can get locally.

But would the stock Agile or the Epi LP Standard+Alnico 2 be a better deal?
Would the Agile cost more after it goes through customs and all man?

I haven't heard about them, only know about the Fernandes Sustainer. Which shops can i go to test the Fernandes LP out man?

I think if the Fernandes doesn't really do it for me, it'll just be a coin toss between:

Agile AL-3000
http://www.rondomusic.net/al3000csbslim.html

Epi LP Standard + Alnico 2 Pro pickup swap
http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPILPSTD
http://www.zzounds.com/item--SEMAPH1B

Unless i get enough suggestions on which one of the 2 choices i should get... hmm.gif

I PERSONALLY would go for the Epiphone....... because I'm such a Gibson/Epi whore.......

But I'm sure the Agile would have better workmanship then a china made Epi......

If it's a KOREAN Epi however........ now that makes all the difference.

you wont be able to get Agile guitars anywhere near here.
Standard and Custom are basically similar apart from cosmetics.
the Custom Plus tho has a maple neck, like the ZW model.
gives it extra snap.

both should be able to get close to the gibson sound, but not with the crappy epi pickups.
its the mass of the guitar that contributes quite a bit too.

Epi's have no such thing.
my Custom Plus neck is somewhere in between a 50s and 60s.
i've tried MIC LPs with thinner necks too.

LPs feel funny with 60s necks, like a complete mismatch.
thin neck, heavy body.
and the sound is also different, since some weight has been lost from the neck.

Ha. Our resident Gibson/Epiphone expert rings in! Yeah.... the Epiphone, no matter how much flak they get..... It's still an epiphone and go through a slightly stricter quality control.......

But the China factories these days......... urgh.........

Haha, thanks for all your help guys. I think i'll go for the Epi LP Standard + Alnico Pro 2 pickup swap.

Which store would you recommend i go to? Hopefully somewhere where i can get a better bargain and test the guitar thoroughly. Yamaha at the Curve told me that i couldn't switch distortion on when i was testing out an Epi. I mean, wtf?? I wanna buy an axe, of course i have to test out how it sounds clean AND distorted right?? mega_shok.gif

apparently the MIC plain top epi has a real maple cap.
cheap ass maple probably not real stunning, but i guess it makes more sense to put a plain top maple cap rather than a plain veneer.

The MIC Epi only has a 1/16 inch of maple cap. Don't think it's worth he hype.

not the normal flame top, and 1/16 is a veneer.

Kind of stupid on their part huh? I mean, most of the people who buy higher end guitars are experienced players (or emo posers). And these guys know that they have to test out a guitar before they buy it. Seeing that Yamaha doesn't let people try it out, I can't help but wonder how many axes they're actually selling besides the Pacifica 112.

On the other hand, they're most probably staying afloat for now by selling overpriced picks... tongue.gif

say... anybody has any experience on these agile guitars? seems like it's korean made but couldn't find anythin on local or asian dealer... not even on-line...

it seems like a good deal.... i'm not too interested on the LP models but the PRS copies are quite tempting... i'm thinking of getting one for jazz playing...

Agile PS4000 amber flame with duncans

the review says that's the lp copies are quite good too... but that's a sensitive issue there... too many gibby/epi die hard users here....

no way can get Agile here.
but if you want a cheap PRS copy, there Stagg for around RM800+.

something higher end would be the indonesian made Marlique.
www.marliqueguitars.com
always been contemplating getting one of them.
the ones on their site start at around RM1500, they have cheaper ones not on there with lower quality electronics and hardware, those are around RM900.

hmmm... the marlique seems nice... where have u seen one? from the webpage its says the dealer in m'sia is roem events... which is rom guitar i think (the guy who made rottw mag)....

the ridho hafiedz sig series is more tempting actually than the prs copy (looks more like a jackson style than a prs).... hope it doesn't cost more than 3k.... ridho is the guitarist for slank from indonesia... though i've never heard their song but they're like really big over there....

actually i've played a classical acoustic guitar once and it was hand made by an indonesian luthier... cost about 2-3k... but the sound is amazing... there was another canadian made classical going for about 4k and the sound wasn't even close to the indonesian guitar... forgot the brand name though.... indonesian quality isn't so bad....

I realize this thread was a couple of years back, but am just placing my input here in case you are still trying to simulate slash's tone.

Firstly, try to get a les paul - solid body (No hollow-body guitars) and hopefully maple wood heh. You won't be able to buy anything grand with that budget so you may stick to Epiphones - try to get the standard. You might be able to purchase for RM 1,800 maybe? or RM 2,800 (not too sure now) - Yes you have to increase your budget.

From there, do some research on pickups. Slash uses Seymour Duncan - Pearly Gates (both neck & bridge pickups) on most of his axes. To obtain the natural drive he gets off his amp, you have to invest in at least a half-stack (30 - 50watts) on a Marshall amp and crank it up all the way up to 8 (hehe). Or else, invest in a tube-amplifier (try class A/B - slightly cheaper). Also, for the Appetite for Destruction album, he uses the Marshall Jubilee tube amplifer series - which is now no longer in production. Though they reproduced it (at a very limited amount - one off) we'll probably never see them reproducing it again.

Good luck.

not to be offensive, but questions in a thread usually have an expiry date. reviving a 2 years old thread with this kind of advice is NOT even justifiable, really. it's not helping too.

might as well ask the TS to "buy whatever slash uses".

Don't forget the Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro.. I have it in my Samick. It's rather low output, but it just loves the gain cranked up on the amp. A bit too smooth for me though...
