French Press.

Drip coffee loses all the oil to the filter.

Oh that's right. Never thought of it. Oil is the expensive commodity in any trade . Can I ask another question. Why the locals coffee roaster add butter into the bean? Any difference in taste. Is it a silly moved?

Totally different profile...

If you are looking for bright distinct and defined aromas, go pour-over (drip)

But if you want bold earthy/musky and more singular profile, french-press bah

...I prefer pour-over (drip), btw

Roasting level of Vietnamese coffee is very different from filtered coffee ones... I doubt one can enjoy it w/o sweetener i.e. condensed milk, etc, let alone decipher its acidity or other aromas

Nope. About to finish a bag of dark roasted Vietnamese beans... drinking them as espresso and latte. They are quite sweet n bold... you are not buying dark roast for acidity and aromas wink.gif

Too bitter probably bad roast or bad extraction

You can brew all types of coffee with the phin. Afterall it's just an all-in-one filter/brewer. Secret is grind properly for a ~4min brew.

"Traditionally" Vietnamese coffee is dark roasted Robusta same as our kopi shop coffee. Good Robusta is hard to get, cheap robusta is bad n bitter so unless you like it I suggest you start with Arabica beans. The joy of brewing coffee at home is you get to try all types of beans

The dark roast I'm about to finish... it's an Arabica Robusta blend

I just got a packet of Brazil coffee bean from Aeon Big in Subang, 1kg @ RM 95. the smell is so good but since im a noob, is this price per kg is extraordinary expensive for this origin? Aeon Big repacked it in transparent plastic bag and there's no brand label to be seen except for their price tag . tks

supermarket "quality" about this price. you can get some nice beans if you know what to look for but generally supermarket beans are good only for caffeine fix.

I usually buy direct from roasters. prices are more expensive for better quality fresh beans

Also do check out the main coffee lover thread
